issg Database: Ecology of Oxyura jamaicensis
Oxyura jamaicensis or ruddy duck as it is commonly called is native to North America.
In France and Spain where there are much smaller numbers of birds present, often only single birds in flocks of other ducks, a more selective shooting technique needs to be used, involving the use of rifles, hides (both floating and shore-based) and boats to move birds towards marksmen.
Please see BirdLife Info White-headed Duck (Oxyura leucocephala) for information on the population status of the white-headed and ruddy duck in Europe, legal protection, establishment of protected areas and planning conservation activities and the implementation of the recommendations of the Bern convention (Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats).

RedOrbit NEWS | Is Homoplasy or Lineage Sorting the Source of Incongruent mtDNA and Nuclear Gene Trees in the ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
In the case of Oxyura, the answer to both questions may be no. Complete mtDNA sequences combined with data from a very large number of nuclear loci may be the only way to resolve such trichotomies.
As outlined above, poor resolution of Oxyura phylogeny may stem from insufficient character data, the presence of hard polytomies, retained ancestral polymorphism, incongruence among data partitions due to the stochastic nature of the lineage sorting process, or homoplasy.
We sought to determine if polytomies within Oxyura are soft or hard, whether character conflict occurs primarily within or between data partitions, and how much data would be required to resolve the relationships of this group.
