 Tabibito: Kanazawa
Coming back from the temple district, Oyama Jinja was right on the way so I decided to stop by, and I’m glad I did.
The enclosed area hosts the larger Oyama shrine and a minor shrine surrounded by some gardens that would make for good photos in all seasons.
It’s not a large shrine and considering all of the other sights in the city, I’m sure it is often overlooked by the usual visitor to Kanazawa.

Established in 1599 as the U-Tatsu Hachiman-gu (shrine) to memorialize the first Maeda Daimyo of the Kaga fief, Toshi-ie, it was moved in 1873 from U-Tatsu Yama (mountain) in the east of the city to its present location and became Oyama Jinja.
Construction on the Main Gate began November 25, 1875, having been promoted by such persons as then-Mayor of Kanazawa Jun-ya Hasegawa and the Otsuka brothers, and under the design and direction of Kichi-no-suke Tsuda.
The style of the wood-floored areas is of superior and distinctive quality.

Mk.III: Death At Lunchtime Just now
Just now I went to have lunch in the grounds of Oyama Jinja, Kanazawa’s most famous shrine that backs onto the office I work in.
It’s a restful spot to spend even ten minutes — the ancient ponds and moss-covered rocks are a rare tonic for the weldschmertz.

 Municipal Newsletter Setagaya
In the Edo Era, Afuri-jinja Shrine at Oyama gathered those faithful to the gods of water, agriculture and commerce, and the source of Sangenjaya’s name was its three teahouses where weary pilgrims could rest.
Sangenjaya, bustling with young people enjoying shopping, concerts and live theater, used to be a well-known rest station along Oyama Kaido Street when visiting Oyama, in Kanagawa Prefecture, from Edo (the old name for Tokyo).
A trace of the old street remains in a road sign in the shape of a stone lantern that still stands these days at the corner of an intersection.

 Mk.III: A Moment Of Clarity
The ten minutes walking took us from the heart of downtown, alongside central park with its towering old trees, along the narrow street in front of Oyama Jinja (Kanazawa's principal shrine, from a tourism point of view) and finally up the stairs, under the famous gate and through the shrine grounds to our office.
Our iPod this morning was throwing out warm songs to cheer us in case we were blue about the snow.
We had a snowfall overnight - big, dry, fluffy snow too.
