The Ozark Highlands Trail, built and maintained by over 3,000 volunteers, is the longest hiking trail in the forest and extends for 165 miles from the Buffalo National River to Lake Fort Smith State Park in the far western portion of the state.
The Ozark National Forest is one of three National Forests in the State of Arkansas.
Louisiana, 60 miles of which are within the Ozark National Forest.

 Ozark Highlands Trail
It p[asses through some of the most remote areas of the Ozark National Forest and is noted for its mountainous terrain, scenic views, lush upland hardwood forests, unique rock outcroppings and clear mountain streams.
It begins at Lake Fort Smith State Park in western Arkansas, travels east across the entire Ozark National Forest, turns north to cross the Gene Rush/Buffalo River Wildlife Management Area, and eventually ends up on the Buffalo National River in the Richland Vally across from Wollum Campground.
The major National Forest Recreation Areas which provide access are Shores Lake, White Rock Mountain, Ozone, How Creek Falls, Fairview and Richland Creek.

 9/6/2004 -- Ozark Forest Projects Target Insects, Wildfires
The Ozark-St. Francis National Forest has initiated a 60,000 acre stewardship project with The Nature Conservancy, with hunting organizations the National Wild Turkey Federation and Quail Unlimited, with the Audubon Society, with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and with the Caddo Nation of Oklahoma.
The Ozark National Forest covers 1.2 million acres, mostly in the Ozark mountains of central Arkansas.
In another forest restoration effort, the Departments of Agriculture and Interior and the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) signed an agreement to work together to reduce wildland fire risks and promote what federal officials called "biomass utilization" projects on federal and private lands adjacent to communities throughout the United States.

T he Ozark National Forest in northwest Arkansas is full of striking features, from the craggy bluffs of the state's highest point on Mount Magazine to the underground sculptures in Blanchard Springs Caverns.
The 21,000-acre St. Francis National Forest juts out of the delta region of eastern Arkansas in striking contrast to the cropland nearby.

Thirteen miles of the Ozark Trail pass through Pioneer Forest, linking a portion of the Mark Twain National Forest to the north with the Ozark National Scenic Riverways to the south and affords some of the best long-distance hiking in the midwest.

 Arkansas Hiking Trails Info Page
It is located in the 14,200 acre Upper Buffalo Wilderness Area of the Ozark National Forest, near the Buffalo River.
Most of the trail is in the Ouachita National Forest, so camping is allowed along the route, and there are three short spur trails down to campgrounds on the Ouachita River.
This is a loop trail which leads hikers in to the National Forest surrounding the Lake.
