Comic books suffer the repeated indignity of being referred to as "cartoons" (a word that signifies animated drawings only) or "funnies" (a slang term for the comedic newspaper strips).
While it is true that comics were originally oriented strictly for children and the situations were often patently childish, the form has grown and matured at a staggering rate.
The comic is done in the style of the graphic EC Comics of the 1950s, with much blood and a Gothic stance.

Dick Giordano, who had worked for Charlton Comics, suggested using a cast of old Charlton characters that had recently been acquired by DC; but since Moore and Gibbons wanted to do a serious storyline in which some of the newly acquired characters would die, this was not feasible.
The comic is being read by a teenage boy whilst he sits beside a newsstand, whose proprietor, meanwhile, contemplates the latest news headlines and discusses them with his customers.
DC Comics also released a limited edition badge set featuring characters and images from the series, including a replica of the blood-stained smiley face badge worn by The Comedian that was featured so prominently in the story.

 OZYMANDIAS
1939), part of the second generation of American vigilantes, is Ozymandias, the "Smartest Man in the World," a self-made tycoon, and a supreme master of martial, acrobatic, and metaphysical arts.
He had a hashish-induced vision of Pharaoh Rameses II [the historic Ozymandias] in Alexandria, Egypt, that inspired the second phase of his heroic quest.
Ozymandias retired from vigilantism before passage of the Keene Act of 1977 and went public with his true identity.

Ozymandias, furthermore, once confronted with the fundamental inflatable force we call Chuck Taine, would have to adopt a sour John Forte-style long face and own up to the overall insanity of his master plan, perhaps moments before he self-destructed.
Comics, after all, did not begin with the costumed superhero, although Bouncing Boy does originate from and belong in that genre.
As such, a theory of comics that excludes his like has taken on the tone of a surly adolescent who rails at anything childlike in an immature attempt to prove his maturity.

Yes, in VII.14.9 Ozymandias' very rigid legs do project at a certain highly suggestive angle, contrasted in the facing panel (VII.15.7) by the angle of Laurie's body as she settles herself next to Dan.
Ozymandias performs while the world watches; Dan can't manage, as the dream that follows this sequence makes plain, because he's afraid that an angry Dr. Manhattan may be watching him and Laurie.

Obv it's far more "realistic"/political than the stereotype superhero comic but it's the fact that it's that kind of treatment of superheroes (their being active in our (80s) world,I guess) that gives it a lot of its appeal, for me, so I'm very happy w/the cartoonish ending that roots it in that.
Well, despite being a "superhero" comic, Watchmen is otherwise quite credible and realistic, that's why the ending always struck to me as silly.
Also complaining about the use of a psychic in a comic that features Dr. Manhattan is on the face of it a little strange, except that part of the set-up is the fact that Dr. Manhattan is completely unlike anything else ever and is immediately the elephant in the living room.

Comics are not a mish-mash, ramshackle, shorthand, piecemeal, handicap or dumbing-down of the components.
Marvel editor Tom Brevoort acknowledges that comics can be viewed as "adolescent male power fantasies. As such, while successive generations of creators have succeeded in plumbing new depths and crafting works of compelling beauty centered around such characters," comics still cant break free of their juvenile origins.
