  MILITARY FIREARMS -- WALTHER P38 9MM PISTOL
Luger and Walther P-38 pistols are often confused with one another, as both were developed and manufactured to be used by the German army during WW I and WW II.
Walther had already been working on such pistols, in particular the Armee Pistole (or AP) and the Heeres Pistole (or HP) that were quite similar to the forthcoming P38.
The P38 is a recoil-operated, locked breech design with a verticlally tilting blocking bar that connects the 4.9 inch moving barrel and the slide.

These pistols were manufactured under extreme conditions and the workmanship and finish are not of the highest quality but it is a rare piece and very collectable.

Every pistol was test fired and then stamped with a military test proofmark on each slide, (right hand side), locking block and barrel.

OutdoorsBest Forums: Fair value and opinions on p38 pistol
The pistols compare pretty well with the modern pistols, and were actually the first of the modern 9mm.
Considering pistols must be kept with trigger locks on and in a locked case or safe, and ammunition in a separate locked container, the only viable home defense use (legally at least) would be to whack the intruder over the head with the locking cases.
As you note, many of the aluminum framed pistols are marked as P-38, and I guess it's hard to argue with the maker's rollmark, but nonetheless, I fall into that group of enthusiasts that refers to the original steel framed P-38 as a P-38 and anything else as a P-1.
