P-3 Orion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Lockheed P-3 Orion is a maritime patrol aircraft of the United States military used primarily for maritime patrol, reconnaissance, and anti-submarine warfare.
The P-3 Orion is based on the Lockheed L-188 Electra which met limited success as an airliner against emerging pure jets.
The Orion is powered by 4 powerful and efficient turboprops which give it speed comparable to fast propeller powered fighters, or even slow turbofan jets such as the A-10.

 The P-3 Orion
Named for the winter constellation of the mighty hunter, the Orion was actually derived from the famous Lockheed Electra civil airliner.
The Orions were used to monitor shipping in the Persian Gulf and passed targeting information on to tactical aircraft.
With an operative range of 17 hours, the Orion satisfy the specific demands for patrol and ASW missions: it has a cruise speed high enought and, at the meantime, is able to orbit near the target for seven hours to a maximum distance of 1850 kms from the home base.

The Orion retained the basic fuselage structure of the Electra, and only differed by being shortened by 2.24m (7ft 4in) and incorporating a large weapons bay.
Mines, depth charges, torpedoes and nuclear weapons can be accommodated in the bay, with 10 underwing pylons for an additional variety of weapons.
Orions are in service with Australia, Iran, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Portugal, Spain and the United States.

Up till 2001 99 Orions would have gone through the Sustained Readiness Program (SRP) to increase their technical lifetime to 38 years, but after completion of 13 aircraft the program was terminated because Raytheon E-Systems (the contractor) was overrunning the budget and because of technical problems.
To reduce the workload of the nineteen P-3C and P-3W Orions (one aircraft crashed in 1991), it was decided to purchase an additional three (ex USN) P-3B Orions for use as bounce birds and pilot trainers.
The airframe is a derivative of the USN P-3 Orion aircraft and the avionics and sensor subsystems are derived from the USN S-3A Viking aircraft.

P-2 Neptune - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The Lockheed P-2 Neptune (until 1963 the P2V Neptune) was a naval patrol bomber and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft for the United States Navy between 1947 and 1978, replacing the PV-1 Ventura and PV-2 Harpoon and being replaced in turn with the P-3 Orion.
It was one of the first aircraft to be fitted in operational service with both piston and jet engines, several Boeing C-97 and Avro Shackleton aircraft also achieved that distinction; it leads naturally to an unusual sound during overflight.
In Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and the US Navy its tasks were taken over by the much larger and more capable P-3 Orion and by the 1970s it was only in use by US reserve units.

The fuselage length of the Electra was not necessary for the Orion and therefore the fuselage was shortened by 2.13 meters; this also resulted in a remarkable weight reduction.
The Electra's excellent view from the flightdeck was even improved for the Orion by replacing the seven window panels by five larger examples with a flat panel in the middle.
The Orion's nose radome is a bit more pointed than the one on the Electra and the last major difference is the Magnetic Anomaly Detector that required some design changes to the tail section.

There should be no shortage of Orions available for Asian operators as fatigue problems are forcing the USN to accelerate the retirement of its fleet (Flight International, 25 November-1 December).
