At the Second OECD World Forum on "Statistics, Knowledge and Policy", held in Istanbul, PARIS21 organised a session on 29 June 2007 on the theme “Building Statistical Capacity to Monitor the Progress of Societies”.

The Annual PARIS21 Consortium meeting continues to be co‑chaired by the Chairman of the DAC and a developing country member of the Bureau of the UN Statistical Commission.

PARIS21 held its second annual meeting in the OECD premises in Paris from 4-5 October 2001.
Previously, PARIS21 was monitored by an Interim Steering Committee.
One of them is the risk of seeing PARIS21 transformed into a mere formal forum, in which the basic and sometimes contradictory issues of technical assistance would not be sufficiently discussed, such that new orientations for improved statistical technical assistance would not be thoroughly debated.

At its 1-2 July 2003 meeting, the PARIS21 steering committee reviewed the results of an independent evaluation which looked at the progress of the initiative against its objectives since its inception three years ago.
The PARIS21 Secretariat is currently drafting a budgeted word programme for 2004-2006 and is working to secure funds to implement this programme.
I hope that PARIS21 can count on a closer collaboration with its partners in the Arab region in the future and that this forum will be the first step towards a wider and strong partnership.

Examples include the work of PARIS21, making the case for evidence-based policy among statisticians and policy-makers; the self-assessments of statistical practices that have been carried out by countries participating in the General Data Dissemination System; and, recently, inter-agency efforts to improve the estimates of child mortality and immunization rates.
This was recognized by the Roundtable on “Better Measuring, Monitoring and Managing for Development Results” held in June 2002 in Washington, DC, which concluded that greater statistical support was needed, both at international and national levels, to improve the measurement of development goals.
The primary objectives of the team are to identify gaps in national and international statistical processes, and inconsistencies that may exist between national and international requirements, and to propose coordinated actions to strengthen statistical systems and resolve any inconsistencies and gaps found.

 Statistical Capacity Building - Seeking a Senior Development Statistics Adviser
Century (PARIS21) wish to recruit an experienced statistical manager who has direct experience of strategic statistical development planning in developing countries.
The Adviser will work with the World Bank and the PARIS21 Secretariat to help develop better international advocacy for statistics, to help align and integrate statistics into the evolving development agenda; and to provide support to countries to secure both funding and technical support for national strategies for the development of statistics.
The post holder will be required to spend an initial period, to be agreed, at the headquarters of the World Bank in Washington DC and make frequent visits to the Bank during the assignment.
