PBL is an attempt to create new instructional practices that reflect the environment in which children now live and learn.
PBL is a way of working with students as they discover more about themselves and the world, and that brings job satisfaction.
PBL can contribute significantly to this process by encouraging teacher collaboration, motivating students to achieve, using the tools and language of project management and organizational change, and helping to incorporate school-wide learning outcomes into the curriculum.

f0000012 Scaffolding for Success in Problem-Based Learning
The definition of PBL that is used here is that it is a subset of problem-centered learning methods which is easily identifiable by the use of typically ill-structured problems which precede and motivate learning, and act as a vehicle for encouraging student ownership of the learning environment.
PBL lays the responsibility and, ultimately, the control of the learning process essentially at the feet of the student; however, this is not a process of abandonment.
The benefits of PBL are often constrained by implementation factors, such as consideration for external (non-PBL) courses and student perceptions of time requirements, or by gradual introduction of the PBL environment (such as gradated fidelity), or by bounding the degree to which ideals are attempted to be implemented.

Evaluation of Project Based Learning   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
PBL (and related instructional approaches) has generally been shown to be effective in increasing student motivation and in improving student problem-solving and higher order thinking skills.
PBL is especially effective when supported by educational technology (Blumenfeld et al., 1991; Means and Olson, 1997; Coley, Cradler, and Engel, 1996).
Project-based learning is typically implemented in the context of comprehensive educational reforms and therefore it is difficult to isolate the effects of PBL on student learning.

In many ways, PBL was the right response for the time in which it gained a foothold in medical schools, when one considers the questions which were being raised at the time about problems with traditional medical curricula.
Another contributing factor to the success of PBL as an innovation is that in the first few schools where it was attempted, it was perceived as being very successful by faculty and students.
PBL will undoubtedly change in its implementation from the initial conceptions because of both new demands and opportunities placed on schools, and because of "poor" or half-hearted implementation.
