  PBM Mariner
The Martin Mariner was a key aircraft in long Pacific patrols, for scouting purposes and rescue operations for downed pilots.
Mariners underwent rigorous preflight checks by a ground technician and then by the plane captain, a machinist’s mate who always flew on his assigned plane.

Mariners sunk five of the ten submarines involved in the operation.
The PBM's lack of landing gear became a liability, because it could not operate from the well-equipped air bases that had become common in the areas served by the type.
However, the Mariner was not economical to operate as a civil aircraft and the Smithsonian Institution accepted the donation of 122071 in 1973.

Mariners immediately quickly found themselves operating in near-war conditions, as the US was expanding the range and scope of naval patrols to help protect shipments of material to Britain against German U-boats.
The Mariner was stripped down of all non-essential items, fitted with specially modified beaching gear, turned into the wind, and then took off from the dry lake bed, finally arriving in San Diego with no further trouble.
From 5 to 7 demilitarized Mariners were used by a Columbian air transport company in the late 1940s, but the company folded after a year or so in operation, and apparently a handful of Mariners flew with US civil companies as cargo haulers for a time.

Perhaps the most unusual feature of the PBM configuration was the gull shape of the full cantilever wing, with the engines located at the juncture of the wing break on either side of the hull.
For example, the Mariner was 52 percent heavier and had 58 percent more power than the Catalina, but the two aircraft had about the same wing and drag areas.
As would be expected, both the maximum and cruising speeds of the Mariner were somewhat higher than those of the Catalina, as was the value of the maximum lift-drag ratio.

Richard Hoffman adjusts this perception in his book about the PBM Mariner, an aircraft equipping more US flying boat squadrons than the venerable Catalina and accounting for ten German U-boats during the Battle of the Atlantic.
Mariner squadrons made a valuable contribution to the Battle of the Atlantic, sinking more U-boats than “any other land-based type of aircraft” (p.

 Martin 162A
However, the rising tensions in Europe increased the need for maritime patrol aircraft, and the Navy decided to fund the development of the PBM without a full-scale prototype.
Martin engineers did not consider the deviations from the 162 plans to be a significant problem because they were more concerned about the hydrodynamic qualities of the 162A's hull than its flight characteristics, which they could evaluate with wind tunnel models.
Even after the unveiling of the 162A to the public, Martin kept details of the PBM program secret, and fostered the general impression that the 162A was a prototype for a new Clipper design.
