PBS said Boston-based station WGBH, which produces the "Frontline" investigative series, warned sister stations that if they chose to carry the unedited version, they did so at their own risk.
As of Tuesday morning, at least 47 of 349 stations in the PBS network, including some of the larger affiliates in Los Angeles, New York, suburban Washington, Boston and Seattle, had opted to broadcast the unedited version, Aaronson said.
In addition, any station electing to carry the unedited documentary had to send PBS a release stating the affiliate had previewed the film and understood that it, not "Frontline," would be held liable for any regulatory action the FCC took, Aaronson said.

A new side of 'Frontline' / PBS offshoot seeks to tell foreign news in different way
But the PBS program called "Frontline/World" that premieres Thursday night comes from a long tradition of foreign affairs reporting -- a tradition that is getting a makeover, admits series editor Stephen Talbot.
The report on African arms trafficking (which links it to the Ukrainian mafia) is a "Frontline/World" exclusive that was co-produced by the Center for Investigative Reporting in San Francisco, where Talbot has worked on and off for many years.
But PBS didn't want to expand its "Frontline" programs into the summer (when "Frontline" doesn't normally air), so "Frontline/World" has an odd schedule: After Thursday, it won't return to PBS until October, when it will then air seven times through next May.
