Private branch exchange - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
PBXs are differentiated from "Key Systems" in that users of Key systems manually select their own out-going lines while PBXs select the out-going line (trunk) automatically.
The PBX's are connected to the outside world by a number of lines called trunk lines.
PBXs were distinguished from smaller "key systems" by the fact that external lines are not normally indicated or selectable at an individual extension.

What is private branch exchange? - a definition from Whatis.com - see also: PBX
The PBX is owned and operated by the enterprise rather than the telephone company (which may be a supplier or service provider, however).
Today, PBXs use digital technology (digital signals are converted to analog for outside calls on the local loop using plain old telephone service).
In some situations, alternatives to a PBX include centrex service (in which a pool of lines are rented at the phone company's central office), key telephone systems, and, for very small enterprises, primary rate Integrated Services Digital Network.

A PBX enables a single-line telephone set to gain access to one of a group of pooled (shared) trunks by dialing an 8 or 9 prefix.
PBXs also include functions such as least cost routing for outside calls, call forwarding, conference calling and call accounting.
Modern PBXs use all-digital methods for switching, but may support both analog and digital telephones and telephone lines.

 PBX
A PBX allows an organization to have fewer outside lines than extensions because it is safe to assume that not all extensions will be in use at once.
Although PBXs and key systems are networks, they are deemed CPE because they are owned and operated by the customer (business, hospital, etc.), not the local telephone company.
PBXs allow for organizations to have a flexible telephone system designed for their specific needs and changeable over time.

ONLamp.com -- The PBX Is Dead; Long Live VoIP
Telephone systems have been slowly evolving from their circuit-switched origins (a PBX is essentially a miniature version of the telephone company's central office) to completely packet-switched systems such as Asterisk.
PBX vendors and their advocates are usually quick to point out that VoIP has been relatively slow to take off.
Perhaps you will be able to find a closed PBX for under $1000, but it's capabilities cannot even begin to approach those of Asterisk, and it will typically require the customer to pay for features they neither want nor need.

 ONLamp.com -- Asterisk: A Bare-Bones VoIP Example
PBX installations range from key systems with a few lines to large platforms fed by Primary Rate Interface ISDN (PRI) that are complex and expensive to deploy, with hundreds or thousands of extensions spanning several states or continents.
Until now, open source telephony applications have been at the periphery of the PBX, and even then, they have not been PBX-specific: fax modem software, simple voicemail software, and caller-identification software all work in conjunction with standard phone lines, but rarely together in concert as a unified platform.
Asterisk is both an open source toolkit for telephony applications and a full-featured call-processing server in itself.

What is PBX? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
Most medium-sized and larger companies use a PBX because it's much less expensive than connecting an external telephone line to every telephone in the organization.
In addition, it's easier to call someone within a PBX because the number you need to dial is typically just 3 or 4 digits.
A new variation on the PBX theme is the centrex, which is a PBX with all switching occurring at a local telephone office instead of at the company's premises.

Like any PBX, it allows a number of attached telephones to make calls to one another, and to connect to other telephone services including the PSTN.
Originally designed for the Linux operating system, Asterisk now also runs on OpenBSD, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, Sun Solaris, and Microsoft Windows, although as the "native" platform, Linux is the best-supported of these.
If Asterisk is to be used as a PBX, a dial plan has to be created specifically for this purpose.
