PBY Catalina was the United States Navy designation for an American and Canadian-built flying boat of the 1930s and 1940s.
The name "Catalina" had been used by Consolidated for their commercial sales prior to the British order, and was eventually adopted by the US Navy on October 1, 1941.
Catalinas were the most extensively used anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters of the Second World War.

The Catalina operated and maintained by the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society, was purchased in 2002 in Portugal where it had been operated as a water bomber under Chilean registration, and was flown to Australia in September 2003.
HARS intends to restore the Catalina to conform as closely as possible to the configuration of the famous RAAF "Black cats" of World War II.
The Society's exhibit will proudly represent the "Black Cat" squadrons of the RAAF and will be a fitting tribute to the 239 Australian airmen who lost their lives undertaking hazardous bombing and mine laying missions both at night and in daylight, and always at very low altitudes.

The PBY CATALINA INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION, a non-profit organization whose mandate is to promote enjoyable camaraderie within the Catalina flying boat international community, became aware of this "once in a lifetime" specimen while holding its 1995 annual reunion in Pensacola and investigated what might be in store for it in the future.
In consultation with the Museum, the PBY CIA learned that there are avenues for groups, such as the PBY CIA, to provide the funding support to proceed with a restoration project because, otherwise, it might take several years before they would be able to undertake the operation.
After a survey of the members revealed that the Association had the capability of effective fund raising, the PBY CIA was instrumental in organizing a non-profit corporation to solicit, raise and disburse funds to finance the Cutaway PBY Display within The National Museum of Naval Aviation at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola Florida.

The Consolidated PBY Catalina was the U. Navy's most successful patrol flying boat of the war but naval aviators also used the PBY to attack ships at night, and to search for and rescue people stranded at sea.
The final development model of the PBY series was the PBY-6A, equipped with new radar, twin.50 caliber guns in a power-driven bow turret, and a new tail with a taller vertical fin first seen on the PBN-1.
Most commanders felt that the PBY lacked the defensive armament to fend off Luftwaffe fighters and patrol aircraft such as the Focke Wulf FW 200 Condor or the Junkers Ju 88 but several dramatic duels with these aircraft disproved the idea that PBY crews could not defend themselves.

In May l94l, a lend-lease PBY flown by a U.S. Navy pilot on duty as an instructor with the RAF, is credited with locating the German pocket-battleship Bismarck to be sunk the following day by a British battleship/cruiser force.
It was also a PBY that made the only attack on a Japanese ship when it bombed a midget submarine on 7 December l94l, and later spotted the Japanese invasion and carrier strike forces during the Battle of Midway in June l942.
It was in the latter functions that the PBY established its greatest legacy by sinking more enemy shipping than any other single type of aircraft during World War II.

A British Catalina located and tracked the German battleship Bismark in May 1941, with U.S. Navy Lt(jg) "Tuck" Smith as copilot.
By the end of 1941, when America entered the war, 16 squadrons were flying PBY-5s, with 1,200 horsepower R-1830-92 engines and capable of carrying four 325 pound depth charges (for use against submarines), two Mark XIII torpedoes or four 500 or 1,000 pound bombs.
Able to remain airborne for more than 24 hours in the days before aerial refueling, the PBY served wherever there were oceans in World War II.

Sunk by strafing Japanese Zeros of the 4th Kokutai that raided Port Moresby, and strafed this Catalina while moored at Napa Napa, in Fairfax Harbor.
Although the wreck was known since the war it was rediscovered in the first half of 2003 by the POMSAC - a Port Moresby Sub-Aqua Club, when the InterOil Refinery was being constructed.
The wreck has not been positivily identified, but is either A24-3 or A24-6, one of the two Catalinas sunk during the air raid.
