IBM Convertible - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Convertible was as powerful as the Portable, but could run on batteries and was marginally more practical.
The Convertible had two 3.5", 720 kilobyte floppy disk drives (the first IBM PC to come with 3.5" drives as standard equipment), and could accept a number of attachments and gadgets (including a thermal printer and special monitors that attached to the LCD port).
However, the Convertible was heavy, not much faster than the Portable it replaced (despite the newer CMOS processor and use of static RAM), didn't come with traditional PC expansion ports (such as serial ports and a parallel port) without an add-on, and had a hard-to-read, oddly-shaped LCD screen (the first screens lacked a backlight).

Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows: Tablet PC Roundup
Convertible laptops resemble "normal" notebook computers, but they feature screens that can be rotated around and locked back on top of the keyboard, presenting the user with a second, slate-like, form.
After using the devices for an extended period of time, I'm convinced that all of the advantages of the ultra-mobile notebook form factor used by these devices are compromised by the demands of their screens' active digitizer, which must track the stylus from as far as an inch away from the screen.
If you're a typical PC user--that is, someone who generally uses a PC at a desk, or can type proficiently on a notebook computer--a Tablet PC might not be the best choice right now, primarily because most of these devices compromise on performance and battery life.
