But while the speakers are connected to the same audio source, it is very easy for a salesperson or the store manager to set the controls (volume, bass, and treble) on the various sets of computer speakers to make one sound better than the rest and influence your purchasing decision.
Speakers with higher watt ratings are typically capable of accurately producing sounds at higher volumes and are generally more accurate than speakers with lower wattage ratings.
Speaker position is important for your sound stage, for example: if you have your speakers properly placed on either side of you monitor and are watching a bouncing ball moving from the left side of your monitor to the right side of your monitor.

PC speaker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The PC speaker is the most primitive sound system used in IBM compatible PCs, and in fact used to be the only one in use in PC games before more technologically advanced sound cards such as AdLib or the Sound Blaster were introduced as ISA plug-in cards in the late 1980s.
The PC speaker is best characterized by its inability to play more than one tone at once, the waveform being generated by the Programmable Interval Timer.
In spite of its limited nature, the PC speaker was often used in very innovative ways to create the impression of polyphonic music or sound effects within computer games of its era, such as the LucasArts series of adventure games from the mid-1990s, using swift arpeggios.

Multimedia speaker comparison: Altec Lansing Select 4100, Cambridge SoundWorks FPS1600, Creative Inspire Digital 5700 ...
The basic kind of half-decent PC speaker system is the "2.1" channel setup, with two mid-to-high-frequency satellite speakers and one larger subwoofer - the ".1" part, since it's bass-only.
Inside the small speakers is, wonder of wonders, a bit of acetate fibre wadding, and drivers rated at 10 watts RMS for the satellites and 12 watts for the centre speaker.
The centre speaker's meant to be 21 watts, but the back of the driver says 12; you can maybe get a bit more through it by feeding it only frequencies that it can easily handle (which is what all good sub-sat systems should do), but 21 watts is still stretching it.

Buying Guide: PC Speaker Systems PC Magazine - Find Articles
There was a time when "good PC speakers" was something of a contradiction in terms.
If your PC is already in cramped quarters and you don't play games or listen to loud music, this may be a good choice.
A 2.1 speaker setup is ideal for the music enthusiast who doesn't play many games, doesn't watch DVD movies often, and operates in a space-challenged environment.

I really need to have a *VERY* quiet PC (one that doesn't beep at all) but I need to hear the audible queues from vi, etc that are generated out of that speaker.
I believe you'd need to jumper the pc speaker output from the case header into the one of the sound card inputs in order to get the pc speaker beep to be controlled by the volume control.
You should be able to kill the PC speaker altogether by unloading the "pcspkr" module, and keep it from being loaded by adding "fllist pcspkr" to a new file called /etc/modprobe.d/local.

While the Creative speakers are said to be best for high quality at low volumes, the Klipsch speakers get much louder, with a more strident lower end.
PC Magazine reviews a few speaker systems individually, and since all get numerical ratings, you can compare them to some extent.
PC Magazine doesn't cover speakers as thoroughly as they do other computer peripherals, and in the last year, editors have only offered one comparison review.

If you like listening to music while using your PC, or enjoy games with all their sound effects, you will generally be disappointed with most of the PC speaker systems available.
The frequency where the voltage across the speaker terminals is highest is the resonant frequency, and you will need this to double check the figures from the Linkwitz transform spreadsheet.
This is also the speaker return point for the satellite speakers - the sub-woofer driver is connected to the amp in bridge, so it has no earth return.

A usual PC speaker cabinet is generally too cheaply made, although a large enough one might do well and not melt or deform.
The kind of speaker design such as the square frame 4" type with a small magnet used in intercoms and small radios is very good and efficient, and will make the most of this amp.

Although DenGuru.com doesn't generally test more than two speakers at once, its reviews are the most thorough we found, and editors routinely deconstruct subwoofers and satellite speakers to examine their guts.
PC Magazine's Don Labriola says it best: "Depending on whom you talk to, 7.1-channel audio is either the Holy Grail of immersive sound or the answer to a question nobody asked." The problem is that there's hardly any 7.1 source material in existence.
When it comes to 2.1 speakers, our chart is a little misleading, since we found three great reviews for an evolutionary Altec Lansing 2.1 speaker, the VS2121, which turned into the VS2221 and is now the VS2321.

The pitiful beeps and squawks which this speaker was capable of generating seemed adequate then, but of course with the advent of soundcards and digital sound, the speaker has become the poor relation for sound generation.
To understand how to use the PC speaker, we need to understand a few other elements of how the PC operates, and also remind ourselves of some elementary physics, so here's a brief overview.
That is, once you've connected the speaker to timer 2, you can change the frequency as often as you like without doing the connection again.

And yes, the speaker itself can do whatever it is asked for, the problem is the wave generator that delivers signals, which hardly has any amplification, so for a simple square wave it's ok, but for more complex signals it isn't enough.
But being a 2" speaker you cant expect wicked quality or a 35htz bass response but the point is it's a speaker.
Note also the sound level really depends on the speaker itself, which usually is very small, or sometimes only a buzzer in some PCs, and the place it is located in the case.
