PC98 is a name for computers based on the NEC PC 9800.
In the early 90s 50% of the PCs sold in Japan were PC98 and it is still fairly widespread today.
The PC98 is different to the IBM PC in many ways, it uses its own 16 bit C-Bus instead of the ISA bus, BIOS, I/O port addressing, memory management and graphics output are also different.

For those less fortunate, PC98 is a nightmare created by NEC (a "cool" Japanese company that makes nifty gadgets).
This is partly due to the fact that there are PC98 "video accelerator" cards, that contain the graphics chip and memory, but no VGA connector - the card sends video down to the motherboard where its put back to the original VGA connector.
PC98 serial, parallel, keyboard, and mouse ports are not your "standard" type.

A new, separate graphics bus is necessary to serve the memory and bandwidth hunger of 3D graphics, according to an Intel spokesperson.

PC98 is a set of basic system requirements recommended by Intel and Microsoft.
In other words, any system that uses an Intel based processor and Microsoft written operating system is considered a PC platform.
It's strange that PC98 systems are allow to have ISA slots, but you can't use any ISA devices!

Note: with NEC PC98 and clones you should always say SET PC98=YES before you start actually running some pattern, so that ELO uses the proper video memory areas.
Note that if you use IBM-PC clone (NOT PC98), you see only the upper half of breeder, because there are only 200 rows in CGA hires mode.
Note: with PC98's the image will be left on the screen (as background) if you exit from ELO with x instead of q.

PC98 is a draft design guide which suggests basic desktop PC requirements for next year will include a 200MHz Pentium MMX, 256Kb L2 cache, 32Mb RAM, a minimum of one Universal Serial Bus (USB) port and user protection from incorrectly installing peripherals.
The inclusion of ISA is also an option, despite its lack of Plug and Play capability.
