  Advanced PCB Resources: PCB Milling
Printed circuit board milling is the process of removing areas of copper from a sheet of printed circuit board material to recreate the pads, traces and structures according to patterns from a digital circuit board plan known as a layout file.
In the case of PCB milling the quality of a board is chiefly determined by the system's true, or weighted, milling accuracy and control as well as the condition (sharpness, temper) of the milling bits and their respective feed/ rotational speeds all of which are directly under user control.
Milling is also used to remove large areas of copper; this is often referred to as rubout.

PCB designers often design power supply circuits, including placement of bypass capacitors, used for filtering power supply noise and usually placed near the integrated circuits and bulk capacitors, used to store current for short-term consumption in high-speed integrated circuits and usually distributed fairly evenly throughout the PCB.

Most PCB Milling machines require the drilling of at least two pinning holes to facilitate the mechanical registration of the board on the milling surface.
However, unlike single and double sided board milling processes, which produce a completed board, the process of creating a finished multilayer board requires equipment and supplies in addition to those used on the PCB Milling machine notably a hydraulic or pneumatic tabletop press.
This board data is used by the isolation software to generate the required milling paths and drill hole locations to allow the traces, pads and features to be electrically isolated from the surrounding copper.

The simplest PCB is a layer of copper foil glued to a sheet of plastic (referred to as the substrate), often an epoxy glue reinforced with fiberglass.
The circuit board is formed by removing foil to form the conductors (referred to as "traces") to which components are attached, usually by soldering.
Multilayer PCBs have alignment marks and holes to align layers and permit the PCB to be mounted in equipment that automatically places and solders components.

PCB fabrication is centred on a PCB milling machine, and copper plating tank and a silver plating tank.
Holes are drilled on the PCB blank, and the board is then placed in the copper plating unit to plate copper through these holes.
PCB manufacture costs depend to some extent on the number of blank PCBs required, and the size/complexity of PCBs.

PCB milling is not a static business, it needs to shift on a regular basis to reflect changes happening in the field of PCB design.
Manufacturers of PCB milling hardware need to invest in continual product upgrades and new product development to keep their products in sync with the increasing demands for high levels of precision within the industry.

Non-contact milling techniques ensure that the substrate is precisely cut and delicately handled to preserve the design’s performance characteristics.
Compact PCB laminating equipment securely bonds the inner and outer layers of multilayer boards, while in-house electroplating and chemical-free epoxy paste tools can plate very small through-holes with the quality and reliability of an outside circuit board fabrication facility.
