Berkeley Software Distribution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The lawsuit slowed development of the free-software descendants of BSD for nearly two years while their legal status was in question, and as a result systems based on the Linux kernel, which did not have such legal ambiguity, gained greater support.
While BSD itself was largely superseded by the System V Release 4.x and OSF/1 systems in the 1990s, in recent years modified open source versions of the codebase have seen increasing use and development.
Today, BSD continues to be used as a testbed for technology by academic organizations, as well as finding uses in a lot of commercial and free products and, increasingly, in embedded devices.

PC-BSD - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The GPL was originally used because the PC-BSD project uses the Qt toolkit for it's interface development and the developers were under the impression that applications using the Qt toolkit must be licensed under the GPL or the QPL.
Since many claim that the GNU General Public License (GPL) conflicts with BSD license ideology, a common point of criticism from the *BSD community about PC-BSD originally was that its code was licensed under the GPL - while most open source BSD descendants license exclusively under the BSD license.
The PC-BSD project claims its style of package management, which is similar to that of major operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, is one which most other Unix-like systems struggle with.

As a BSD user, and even more fundamentally as a person who has to try everything out for herself, I find the amount of Linux distros out there absolutely mindboggling and, to be honest, a bit overwhelming.
The BSDs are extremely well documented (the first three projects have excellent online handbooks which can walk you through your first install and then just about everything else you'd ever want to try to do with an operating system) and are quite learnable by anyone with the willingness and patience to try something new.

 BSD: Linux With a Twist
BSD is a full-fledged Unix operating system, which shares Linux' technical prowess and open-source development drive, and with an an unbroken line of descent back to ATandT UNIX version 1 to show as prime pedigree.
BSD FFS and Linux ext2fs are generally very similar, which comes as no surprise considering that ext2fs was designed with FFS in mind.
Eventually BSD was freed from the shackles of the ATandT UNIX source code license requirement as all the ATandT-copyrighted code was gradually replaced.

 FreeBSD Desktop
All custom software developed for PC-BSD, The GUI Installer, Package Manager, Package Creator, were developed using the QT libraries.
Or maybe the BSD folk will decide to do the same thing the GNU guys did when they got miffed over the Qt license: write their own desktop.
If the license of this software is really GPL (and not BSD, I assume there is a typo) then such software is not really helping the BSD community to move forward but instead it helps the assimilation of the BSD into GPL.
