Phase-change Dual - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Much like CD-RW, PD uses a phase change layer that can be overwritten in a single pass of the read/write head.
A PD disc has a capacity of 650 MB, can be rewritten 500,000 times and is enclosed in a protective cartridge.
PD discs are compatible with PD drives, first generation Panasonic DVD-RAM drives and Multi CD-R recorders while PD drives can read and write PD discs as well as read CD-ROMs.

Setting up and using a MicroSolutions Backpack pd/cd Drive
The pd drive can be used as a hard drive (the cartridges can be rewritten over a million times), or as a backup device (the cartridges are supposed to have a shelf life of 30 years).
I can then unmount the pd drive, mount the same physical device as a cd-rom, transfer individual rpm packages to the hard drive, and then remount the pd drive and install them on /usr using rpm.
The drive is not blindingly fast (it took over 2.5 hours to do a 700M installation of Red Hat 5.2 using the cd-rom and my 486 desktop), but on machines with slower processors I don't think the speed of the drive represents a severe bottleneck.

 Section Front: External Storage
The LS-120 drive is a variation of a short-lived drive technology known as the floptical drive, in that it uses a laser, but not to read or write data to the disk surface.
One drawback to the PD drives is that while the drives will read CD-ROM discs, the recording media is not a CD, it's a cartridge that can only be read by another PD drive.
The first generation drives held data in one layer on one side of the disc - total capacity 4.7 GB and although all DVD drives are supposed to read CD-ROM discs as well, these first-generation drives are unable to read discs recorded on CD-R (recordable) or CD-RW (rewritable) drives.

The drive uses a SCSI interface, and the SCSI ID is set by adjusting the jumper switches on the back of the drive.
Once the device was installed, Windows 95 automatically detected both the CD-ROM drive and the PD drive, performed a complete setup and provided separate drive icons for each.
Using approximately 266MB worth of various file types and sizes, it took 34 minutes to copy data to the PD drive and 4 minutes 50 seconds to copy it back to the hard drive, resulting in a write transfer rate of 130KBps and a read transfer rate of 917KBps.

If you usually wait on a drive or CD often, and for several seconds or more each time, caching makes a noticeable difference in how quickly you move from task to task, and how responsive your Macintosh 'feels'.
If you change data on your drive that is also in the System cache, the cached version is thrown away instead of being updated.
Data in the RapidTrak™ PD cache is updated when it is changed on the drive.

PD cartridges with 650 MB now are down to 1300 Yen and sometimes even can be found for 1000 Yen.
While the drive itself is expensive, the media are cheap and reliable, you also can use it as a DVD-ROM reader, a CD-ROM drive, and a PD drive, and it offers direct access unlike a tape drive.
A program coming with the drive offers automatic copying of specified files (or directories), another program offers automatic execution of programs when the cartridge with the respective program is inserted, and you also can copy music CD tracks to PD or DVD cartridges for playing through the computer.

The behaviour of the pd driver can be altered by setting some parameters from the insmod command line.

National RF’s Type PD-3 reduction drive with indicator provides a velvet smooth 6 to1 reduction that may be used to drive tuning capacitors or control potentiometers.
The drive is of the planetary design, similar to those made by the Jackson Brothers.

CameraHobby - Vosonic X-Drive Pro VP300 Digital Wallet Review
An entry-level notebook with a decent sized hard drive can be a mere few hundred more than the largest capacity digital wallets and you get a large, high quality screen, keyboard and usually a CD burner to go with that hard drive.
Hard drives spin at high revolutions, generating heat and that heat has to be dissipated somehow and somewhere.
In a desktop computer, there is physical space around the hard drive, as well as fan units to draw in and circulate cool air over the heat generating components while expelling the hot air.

Phase-change drives can the way you back up data
Phase-change drives originally were supposed to be cheaper than CD-R drives, but lately magneto-optical and CD-R products have come down so much in price that the difference isn't as great as anticipated.
So if you use PD for backup, you're in the same boat as a tape backup user whose only drive breaks down --you have the backup but can't do anything with it.
Whether the shortage of compatible drives is a significant disadvantage to you depends partly on whether your organization can afford duplicate PD drives--remember, you could buy two for the cost of a single CD-R drive.

 Prisoner's Dilemma
The PD is usually thought to illustrate conflict between individual and collective rationally, but the multiple player form (or something very similar) has also been interpreted as demonstrating problems within standard conceptions of individual rationality.
In deference to Hume, Skyrms and Vanderschraaf refer to this kind of asynchronous PD as the "farmer's dilemma." It is instructive to picture it in a tree diagram.
Many of the situations that are alleged to have the structure of the PD, like defense appropriations of military rivals or price setting for duopolistic firms are better modeled by an iterated version of the game in which players play the PD repeatedly, retaining access at each round to the results of all previous rounds.

In my humble opinion, a PD driver is better than MO because when you buy that you get a fast CD-ROM drive too, but you can put only a PD or only a CD in that drive in the same time.
But in my PD drive, the transfer rate is high and the acess time is very low, you can get the short files quickly using PD drive when you need to wait some SECONDs to get short files in normal fast CDROM drive.
