Pervasive Developmental Disorders PDD-NOS, Asperger's Disorder and Autism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-05)
PDD and Asperger's Disorder are labels, or diagnoses, to describe a set of observable characteristics and difficulties in children.
PDD is quite different from what is called "global developmental delay" which usually refers to children whose cognitive and language development is delayed but who are social and communicative typically as typically developing children are.
Ideally children with PDD should be evaluated by a team which includes a developmental pediatrician, a speech and language pathologist, an audiologist, and a psychologist and/or psychiatrist.

PDD is a disease of suspected viral etiology with a potentially long incubation period of months to possibly years.
Because the lesions of PDD are inflammatory in nature, we speculated that diminishing this reaction might lead to clinical improvement and resolution of clinical signs in affected birds.
If you do have a PDD exposure in your home or aviary it is important to discuss with your veterinarian what standards should be used to help guard against exposing other birds before you bring in new or remove a bird from your flock.

PDD is characterized by severe and pervasive impairment in several areas of development: social interaction skills, communication skills, or the presence of stereotyped behavior, interests, and activities.
All types of PDD are neurological disorders and are usually evident by age three.
PDD can be mild, with the child exhibiting a few symptoms while in the school or neighborhood environment.

 Proventricular Dilatation Disease (PDD)
PDD is caused by a virus that progressively destroys the nerve supply to the proventriculus (forestomach), ventriculus (gizzard), and portions of the small intestines.
In some birds with PDD, the severely dilated thin wall of the proventriculus may rupture, resulting in the movement of the food into the abdominal cavity causing severe infection which many times leads to death.
Signs suggestive of PDD include weight loss over a period of weeks to months despite a good appetite, passage of undigested food, vomiting, neurological signs, abdominal distention and impaction of the crop.

Because of the PDD dismissal time changes, about one-third (36 of 117) of the traffic speed limits warning lights near the schools were not operational at the time of the PDDs.
About half of the PDD plans were focused on activities that were related to each other and to the objectives of the School Improvement Plan (SIP), while about half had activities that were not related to one another.

 Pervasive Developmental Disorder
To summarize briefly, PDD is a generic term referring to a group of disorders that share certain essential features: qualitative impairments in reciprocal social interaction, qualitative impairments in both verbal and nonverbal communication and a restrictive stereotypic pattern of behaviours.
There is some evidence to suggest that these atypical forms of PDD are much more common than autism itself, having prevalence rates of 20-30 per 10,000 as compared to 4 per 10,000 for autism.
Children with this atypical PDD frequently present with between five and seven symptoms and a judgment is made by the clinician that these symptoms represent a significant handicap for the child over and above his or her developmental delay.

The PDD is similar in sensitivity and response characteristics to a conventional radioactive ECD, and can be operated at temperatures up to 400°C. For operation in this mode, He and CH are introduced just upstream from the column exit.
The PDD in helium photoionization mode is an excellent replacement for flame ionization detectors in petrochemical or refinery environments, where the flame and use of hydrogen can be problematic.

Parents may note symptoms of PDD as early as infancy and typically onset is prior to 3 years of age.
However, PDDs are correlated with poverty, suicides, crimes, and a variety of medical problems.
However, some parents view the PDD label as no more than a euphemism for autistic spectrum disorders, problematic because this label makes it more difficult to receive aid for early intervention.
