PDO awarded the contract for the construction of the upstream gas treatment expansion in Saih Nihayda in Central Oman to a joint venture between SNC Lavalin and the local Al Hassan group of companies.
Oman Oil Company, the government’s investment arm, the Omar Zawawi group, a leading business group in Oman, and Ferrostaal AG, part of the Germany-based MAN group, are the promoters of this project, with an estimated investment of about $500 million.
Oman’s 2002 budget indicated that the Ministry of Health’s capital expenditure is estimated at $11.6 million for the establishment of many small-specialized hospitals and clinics in rural areas.

Oman's natural gas reserves reportedly went from 12.3 trillion cubic feet (tcf) in 1992 to almost 30 tcf in 2003, with as much as another 2 tcf expected.
Given that Oman's population is growing rapidly, its petroleum reserves are much lower than previously thought, and its non-oil economy is limited, it appears that the sultanate will face a serious economic crisis in the next 10 to 15 years, or even sooner if oil prices plummet.
While Oman is arguably better off than most states in the Middle East, it also appears to have a much more limited political capacity for dealing with a severe economic crisis than many of these other countries where a state of crisis is the norm.

According to Oman’s commercial companies law, all actions by private entities to establish, acquire, and dispose of interests in business enterprises must be announced in the commercial register, and may be subject to the approval of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Oman enacted a copyright protection law in 1996, but did not announce enforcement mechanisms until a ministerial decree in April 1998, which extended protection to foreign copyrighted literary, technical, or scientific works; works of the graphic and plastic arts; and sound and video recordings.
Oman is currently planning to develop a free trade zone in Salalah, adjacent to the international container transshipment port that opened in November 1998.

In the last edition of PDO News Joppe Cramwinckel and Barry Jupp wrote about a joint project between Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and the Ministry of Environment and Regional Municipalities (MRME) to test artificial reef materials and structures in the Omani marine environment of Mina al Fahal.
PDO staff and Contractors constructed three modules, each 4 metres square and 1.5 metres high.
But initial conclusions are that although tyres form an attractive habitat for fish, they are not suitable for long term reef restoration because of their toxicity and instability.

PDO's preparations are underway to host Oman's first Occupational Health Conference, set for 11th -13th December 2006 in Al-Bustan Hotel Palace.
