PDP Packet Data Protocol PDP Context A PDP connection between the UE and the GGSN.
A PDP Context is a connection between the UE and the GGSN, over which the packets are transferred.
Once activated, all PDP contexts have equal status, meaning that a primary PDP context can be deleted while keeping the link between the UE and the GGSN, as long as there are other (secondary) PDP contexts active for the same IP address.

Internet Access over GPRS -TechArena- Guides & Tutorials
The PDP context multiplexing is a function that (1) routes each data unit received on a particular PDP context to the appropriate upper layer and (2) routes each data unit arriving from an upper layer to the appropriate PDP context.
The GPRS bearer is a key characteristic of a PDP context because it specifies QoS properties such as the reliability, delay, throughput, and precedence of the packets transmitted on the PDP context.
When the GGSN identifies the PDP context that has a stored TI that matches the TI in the envelope of the received packet, it discovers the APN associated with this packet and effectively knows the external PDN that the payload (i.e., the original IP packet transmitted by the MS) should be forwarded to.

Supporting Packet-Data QoS in Next-Generation Cellular Networks
A successful PDP context activation leads to the establishment of a packet data session and mobility management states in the MS as well as in the network.
This "secondary" PDP context is a lightweight approach that inherits the majority of its attributes from the "primary" context, and results in the establishment of a separate radio access bearer as a GTP tunnel.
Multiplexing the new application packets onto an existing PDP context may, however, require that the existing QoS profile of the PDP context be modified to accommodate the additional bit-rate requirement of the new flow in addition to the existing ones.

Context events are ordered by time since every message must first be processed as Incoming, then as Resource allocation and only then as Outgoing.
Each decision is bound to a context object, which determines which portion of the request context it applies to.
When individual decisions apply to different sub-groups of the context, the PDP should send each group of decision objects encapsulated by the context flags object with the context flags applicable to these objects set (see the examples in Section 5).

 IP.com's Prior Art Database
A PDP context in the SGSN comprises all the information required to transport data packets from the Iu-interface to the Gn-interface and vice versa.
The loss of such a big number of contexts implicates a high risk for the SGSN to run into an overload situation when a great portion of the mobile stations thus affected immediately tries to re-establish the PDP contexts that have just been lost.
The PDP contexts are saved by defining pairs (A,B) of GTMs, such that B takes over the work of A in case of a recovery or outage of A and A takes over the work of B in case of a recovery or outage of B. Every GTM stores the "shadow contexts" of its partner.

It is possible that the failed PDP contexts are left to hang until the mobile station MS releases them upon detecting that the communication fails.
It is also possible that the 3G-SGSN releases the failed PDP context by sending a reteasePDPcontext message to the mobile station MS in accordance with the GPRS specifications.
In case of a failure in the ATM-PVC connection, the PDP context of the failed ATM-PVC may be moved (rerouted) to another ATM-PVC; the 3G-SGSN sends a modify RAB request (i.

PDP contexts can be further broken down into two types – primary and secondary.
A primary PDP context is a connection from the mobile phone to the network with one IP address allocated to it.
A secondary PDP context is one that shares an IP address with a primary PDP context, but that represents another connection to the network.

The difference from using a dial-up connection over circuit switched is that in GPRS the end user can have several PDP contexts activated simultaneously if the terminal supports several IP addresses.

The method further includes, when terminating the PDP Context, requesting a modification of the paging parameters values so as to have the default or other parameters values.
Preferably, when terminating the PDP Context the mobile station sends a Deactivate PDP Context request message with the information element that specifies the default values for the parameters of the DRX mode.

User of RSIP within GPRS Networks
PDP (Packet Data Protocol) is a term that is used within GPRS networks to refer to IP addresses, X.25 addresses etc. Since we are concerned about IPv4 addresses, the term PDP is synonymous with IPv4 address for this discussion.
As seen in Figure 4, during PDP context activation (which is the procedure for IPv4 address assignment for the MS), one of the fields in the Activate PDP Context Request message sent from the MS to the SGSN is the Access Point Name (APN) field.
The Create PDP Context Request message sent from the SGSN to the GGSN transparently contains the APN field that was used within the Activate PDP Context Request message sent from the MS to the SGSN.

But far more obviously, a word in a grammatical context has a different content from a different word in its own grammatical context (something that is marked in this case by the fact that the latter occupies a quite different point in the activation space of the third layer).

It is assumed that 3GPP nodes will not generate any addresses, except for the single identifier/prefix combination assigned by the GGSN.
Because multiple IPv6 hosts may attach through a 3GPP handset, the IPv6 WG recommends that one or more /64 prefixes should be assigned to each primary PDP context.
Given that mobile devices may generate multiple addresses using more than one interface identifier, this would require DAD for the newly generated addresses over the air interface, and a proxy DAD, function which would increase the complexity and the amount of state to be kept in the GGSN.
