The Department of Otolaryngology is currently conducting a clinical trial of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with the photosensitizer Foscan® for the treatment of recurrent respiratory papillomas.
PDT consists of intravenous injection of a photosensitizer, a 6 day waiting period for the sensitizer to selectively accumulate in the papillomas, and then activation of the sensitizer with non-burning red-light laser.
There was a lag before effects were seen, but 5 of the 6 patients to date followed for 1 year achieved remission of laryngeal disease.
