PFO and Migraine: "Hole in the Heart" and Migraine Connection? Help for Headaches and Migraine Disease from Teri ...
PFO is diagnosed with a TEE (transesophageal echocardiogram), which is performed by passing an ultrasound probe down the esophagus, near the heart to get better results than the traditional echocardiogram, which is performed with a standard ultrasound wand outside the chest.
In both studies, the PFO closure was done because doctors suspected that a blood clot passing through the PFO might have caused a stroke.
PFO closure was associated with reduction of Migraine symptoms in patients having Migraine both with and without aura.

Barnes-Jewish Hospital - Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO)
A patent foramen ovale, or PFO, is an opening between the upper two chambers of the heart that have failed to close after birth.
PFOs are increasingly being suspected as the cause of paradoxical embolic events.
Once a patient with PFO has had an event, they are usually treated with Coumadin to prevent a recurrence of clots.

Migraine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
was published indicating that in some people with a patent foramen ovale (PFO), a hole between the upper chambers of the heart, migraine might result and that the occurrence of migraines might end if the hole were blocked.
The PFO allows blood to go directly from the right side of the heart to the left without passing through the lungs.

Shunting is one of the hallmarks of the PFO.
PFO is diagnosed in 50-70% of patients with stroke of unknown cause.
The risk of repeat stroke due to PFO is increased in patients with leg clots, migraine headache, atrial septal aneurysm (seen by echo), and large PFO shunting (seen by TCD).

Putting Our Heads Together: PFO and Migraine: "Hole in the Heart" and Migraine Connection?
One of the biggest topics of discussion amongst Migraineurs today is that of PFO, "the hole in the heart" that may contribute to Migraines.
Trials are underway to determine the efficacy of PFO closure for Migraine disease.
A PFO is a hole in the wall (septum) that divides the right and left atrium (chambers) of the heart.

 Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO)
A patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a defect in the septum (wall) between the two upper (atrial) chambers of the heart.
A PFO is congenital, meaning it is a defect that is inborn or exists at birth.
Frequently a PFO is not diagnosed until a child or adult with this defect has a transient ischemic attack (TIA) (symptoms of a stroke that last for less than 24 hours), or a stroke.

Minimally Invasive Treatment for Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO)
Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) is an opening in the heart between the right and left atrium that is present in all infants.
However, recent studies have shown that the risk of suffering an embolic stroke may be increased for approximately 25 percent of the population affected with this abnormality.
PFO patients can now benefit from a non-surgical procedure performed in the cardiac cath lab, which successfully and permanently closes the defect.

UW Medicine - Patching the Heart's Atrial Septum (PFO/ASD Closure)
PFOs and ASDs are usually closed only if they cause symptoms like fatigue or shortness of breath, or are suspected of having caused a stroke.
PFO patients with a history of stroke may be eligible to participate in a randomized trial in which they either have their PFO closed or take blood-thinning medications.
For patients with a PFO and a variety of other conditions, such as decompression illness from scuba-diving (“the bends”), a decision to close the PFO should be individualized after discussion with a doctor.

 Columbia University Medical Center
PFO is an important risk factor for stroke recurrence or systemic embolization in medically-treated cryptogenic stroke patients which doubles the two-year rate of stroke recurrence or systemic embolization.
In order to assess the magnitude of the problem, the yearly incidence of cryptogenic strokeand the prevalence of PFO in both the general population and the population with cryptogenic stroke can be used to estimate the number of strokes attributable to PFO.
The yearly incidence of stroke in the U.S. is estimated at 400,000 to 500,000, and approximately 40% are cryptogenic.

Comprehensive Cardiovascular Care Group:PFO - A Hole in Your Heart
A patent foramen ovale, or PFO, is a small flap valve defect (kind of a hole) between the right and left atrium.
If there is debris present in the blood it can bypass the lungs via the PFO and lodge in the brain, causing a stroke, or in the heart, causing a heart attack.
A PFO does not cause a stroke, but its presence may be a pathway for a stroke to occur by allowing blood to flow from the venous system to the arterial system without going through the lungs first.

PFO Treatment (CardioSEAL®) - Swedish MC, Seattle, Washington, WA
The PFO allows blood to pass from the mother through the heart of a child in the womb.
Blood passing through a PFO can then carry a blood clot that may travel to the brain and trigger a stroke.
Once positioned, the “umbrellas” are popped open on either side of the PFO to hold it firmly shut.

Lars Erickson - Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO)
A patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a type of atrial septal defect (ASD), or opening between the two upper chambers of the heart (left and right atria).
Unless a PFO us unusually large it is considered just part of the normal variation between individuals; just as some people have freckles and others do not, some people have a tiny PFO and others do not.
This situation, termed a "paradoxical embolus", is extremely rare largely because the natural flow of blood through a PFO is from the left to the right side of the heart, making if very difficult for clots to pass "against the current" from the right to the left side.

Cardiac services - Treatments, Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) Closure
Blood flow through the PFO is most likely to occur when more pressure is temporarily exerted in the chest, such as while coughing, sneezing or straining to pass a stool.
Instead, many patients with a PFO are treated with blood thinners to prevent clots from forming.
A less-invasive procedure to close the PFO was developed in which a special device is passed through a thin, flexible tube (catheter) and navigated to the heart where it is put in place.

 PFO
It seems to be universally agreed by doctors that a PFO has no clinical significance, unless it is so patent as to cause a large fraction of blood to be `shunted' across the opening, bypassing the lungs.
People with a very patent PFO are usually very sick from their childhood onward until/unless the opening is closed by surgery.
For the majority of people with a PFO, the opening only allows blood to pass through under certain conditions where the pressure is transiently higher on the right side (coughing, straining, Valsalva manoueuvre) and then only a small amount of blood is involved.

Is there a link between migraine and a heart condition (PFO)?
PFOs are present in 15-25% of the general population and studies indicate that the occurrence among sufferers of migraine with aura could be as high as 50%.
These studies, while compelling, are not conclusive and closure of the PFO is not proven as a treatment for migraine.
The MIST Trial will be the first ever study to enrol patients because they are migraine sufferers and to compare results between those who have their PFO closed and those who don't.

Quality of life is often affected as patients on chronic blood thinners must be careful in their activities to avoid injuries which may cause internal or external bleeding.
Surgical closure of a PFO is not often advocated, however the desire to close PFO's is gaining significant interest, as it potentially eliminates the need to continue with long-term anticoagulants and may reduce the risk of a recurrent stroke or TIA.
However, the effectiveness of closing a PFO in preventing a recurrent event has also never been appropriately studied or compared to medical therapy.

I have had irregular beats and sortness of breath with acitvity, so I went to a doc he did Echo and said I had a small asd (which needs closing) with Lt to RT shunting and a bubble study which showed bad RT to Lt shunting.
To confirm they had me do a TEE which showed a large mobile PFO with bi directional shunting, I was told I have slight rt heart enlargement, and my dr hears a faint sistoic murmur.
Systolic murmurs are not related to the asd/pfo perse because the disturbance in flow caused by the pfo/asd is very small to be heard, but murmurs can be heard due to increase flow across the pulmonary or tricuspid valves.
