  PJ Harvey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Polly Jean Harvey (born October 9, 1969) is an English singer and songwriter.
Harvey was born in Yeovil and raised in nearby Corscombe (Dorset, England).
At the age of 18 she began writing her own songs and in January 1991 she formed the original PJ Harvey three-piece band, with herself on vocals and guitars, ex-Automatic Dlamini bandmate Rob Ellis on drums and Ian Olliver on bass (though Olliver was swiftly replaced by Steve Vaughan).

 TrouserPress.com :: PJ Harvey
England's Polly Jean Harvey — distinct from the group PJ Harvey — came to public attention in 1992 with Dry, a startlingly scabrous and extremely dramatic portrait of a woman on the verge of total emotional collapse.
Harvey's attempts to distance herself from the perfervid early-'90s female star-making machinery has ranged from the glamourless nudity on her record covers to the joyless party dress she adopted for Rid of Me-period shows.
With each passing album, PJ Harvey, the band, have promised an increasingly more eclectic raiding of music's hallowed vaults and dusty side roads (with all the requisite irreverence that entails), and in doing so have largely delivered the goods, notwithstanding some inevitable missteps.

 Rid of Me - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Harvey had admired Albini’s distinctively raw recordings of bands like Pixies, Slint, The Breeders, The Jesus Lizard and Nirvana: “I chose to work with him because more than any other engineer I know, he captures the sound of a band playing live- the sound of real instruments, of a drum kick.
Stylistically the record was a natural progression from the heavily guitar-driven punk-blues of her debut Dry, though it also embraced both the noisy elementary dynamics of the Pixies (she claimed their Albini-produced 1988 debut Surfer Rosa as one of her favourite albums), and 60s/70s blues-based metal acts such as Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix Experience.
The record attracted some controversy for its striking fl-and-white cover photography by Maria Mochnacz – the front sleeve depicted a thin, topless Harvey in a bathroom, swinging back a drenched mane of Medusa-like hair, while the back cover was a close-up of her face marked with what appeared to be rope burns.
