When last year Orlen took part in the tender for the purchase of the Mazeikiu oil refinery in Lithuania, and was eventually selected as its strategic investor, it was almost certain that Chalupec would remain in the post until the closing of the deal.
On Jan. 18, the supervisory board of PKN Orlen, on a motion from representatives of the Treasury, dismissed Chalupec from the post of president of the PKN Orlen management board and appointed Piotr Kownacki, the company's vice-president for auditing and regulation, to the post.
PKN Orlen is now one of the largest groups operating in the oil sector in Central and Eastern Europe.

Poland's PKN Orlen on Friday bought a 30.7 percent stake in the Mazeikiu Nafta oil refinery from the Lithuanian government for $852 million, gaining control of the Baltic country's biggest enterprise.
Mazeikiu Nafta said in a statement that PKN Orlen CEO Igor Chalupec was elected refinery chairman at a board meeting on Friday.
On Thursday PKN Orlen bought Yukos' 53.7 percent stake in the refinery for 3.88 billion litas ($1.46 billion).

Dominant Polish fuel firm PKN Orlen was set to begin due diligence on Tuesday, February 3 on its key Czech acquisition target, the petrochemical group Unipetrol, Orlen vice-president Janusz Wisniewski told reporters Monday (February 2).
Orlen, its Hungarian counterpart MOL and global oil major Royal Dutch/Shell have until mid-April to submit binding bids in the privatization of Unipetrol, for which the Czech authorities are offering 63%.
Orlen is trying to move into the driver's seat for its first serious move into Central Europe, a move it sees as key in its desire to become a regional fuel company.

PKN Orlen of Poland has offered to buy a stake in the Mazeikiu Nafta oil complex from the Lithuanian government, even before Vilnius has completed talks on acquiring a majority holding in Mazeikiu from Russian oil giant Yukos.
PKN Orlen said here: "PKN Orlen today handed the Lithuanian government an offer to acquire 40.6 percent of shares in Mazeikiu Nafta.
PKN Orlen did not reveal the offer price for either stake in the Lithuanian oil complex, which includes the sole refinery in the Baltic states, a pipeline and an offshore terminal.

Mazeikiu and Orlen remain vulnerable to a cutoff of Russian supplies, which some investors fear could now be a likely prospect given the tense political relations between Poland and Russia.

PKN Orlen is set to make some big decisions this week; namely, whether it will respect its contractual obligations and sell its stakes in five companies to Agrofert, and whether it will pay an additional Kč 1.64 billion (€ 56 million) for the Unipetrol group, which it recently acquired in a privatization.
But Agrofert helped PKN by not bidding for Unipetrol and helping the Polish company during due diligence, and as such Agrofert is entitled to a “friendly price” for the companies, Bystrov said.
PKN said Sept. 15 that Agrofert had again denied its request to make the full text of the contracts between the companies public.

PKN Orlen has petitioned the Czech Securities Commission (KCP) to investigate whether brokerage house Atlantik finanční trhy manipulated the market in its trading of Unipetrol shares.
PKN, owner of the majority stake in the Unipetrol group, filed the motion with the Securities Commission on Sept. 31 “to review the conduct of Atlantik in connection with the MTO (madatory tender offer),” Kulinska said.
PKN wants to take revenge on Atlantik for what happened at the time of the buyout offer in July and August, he added.
