POSSLQ - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
POSSLQ is abbreviation (or acronym) for "Persons of Opposite Sex Sharing Living Quarters," a term coined in the late 1970s by the United States Census Bureau as part of an effort to more accurately gauge the prevalence of cohabitation in American households.
By the 1990s, the term had fallen out of general usage, and returned to being a specialized term for demographers.
Of course, the cryptogram generated angry letters from faithful cryptogram solvers, since this one strayed from the 4-line, rhyming format.

HOW DOES POSSLQ MEASURE UP? Historical Estimates of Cohabitation
Therefore, we conclude the Adjusted POSSLQ is an acceptable measure for historical trends in the prevalence of cohabitation.
Estimates of the prevalence of cohabitation produced by Adjusted POSSLQ and POSSLQ are quite different with regard to age, marital status, the presence of children and race.
The Adjusted POSSLQ measure increased the rate of unmarried women who were cohabiting in 1997 the most among those in the middle age categories: 35 to 44 (42 percent), and 45 to 54 (36 percent).

PASSLQ   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Safire invented the word to counter a word used by the U.S. census bureau for two people living together but not married, POSSLQ (which would be, Person of the Opposite Sex Sharing Living Quarters).
Safire said that "POSSLQ" was an offense to the 10% of Americans who happen to be gay (not to mention those of us who happen to be happy), so he suggested that the census bureau use PASSLQ instead in a New York Times column.
I hereby waive the previous demand and order the bureau to replace POSSLQ with a noun sufficiently generic to offend no-one: "stuff".

In my opinion, pure chocolate isn't a good topping for dessert: it sets hard and instead of having a soft, luscious mouth feel like ganache, you end up with something that cracks and crunches.
It was invented by the Census Beureau a couple of decades ago, when the rate of such people increased dramatically.

Strange Bedfellows: Taxes may not be sexy, but the tax man wants to know about your client's sex life.
As part of the general easing of sexual attitudes in many parts of the country, there has been a sharp increase in unmarried couples who live together.
So common has sharing bed and board without a marriage license become that in the late 1970s, the people-counters at the Bureau of the Census coined the euphemistic acronym POSSLQ ("Persons of the Opposite Sex Sharing Living Quarters").
The Bureau dropped POSSLQ from the 2000 census, replacing it with two categories: "Unmarried Partner" and "Housemate/Roommate," for those sharing living quarters "primarily to share expenses."
