POTUS Typographicus: Appealing to the Baseline and George W’s Typographic Legacy
Appearing as a Photoshop rendition, typeset in a bastardized, souped-up version of the otherwise elegant Bodoni and printed to give the illusion that it was floating atop an American flag, the sign spanned the length of the carrier’s bridge and served the same purpose for the politically challenged as closed-captioning does for the hearing impaired.
All the components—from a flight-gear-clad POTUS to the commanding “Mission Accomplished” slogan—created an essential mnemonic that Rove hoped would catapult W into American history as the first commander in chief to actually win a war since that one with Germany and Japan in 1945.

POTUS Typographicus is an article by Steve Heller at VOICE: The AIGA Journal of Design (where Steve also happens to be my editor).
White House's graphic design is. "While his handlers would never allow the leader of the free world to go out in public wearing a rayon leisure suit and white bucks, they nonetheless use clownish shareware typefaces with hokey beveled edges and cheesy drop shadows to represent his ideas," Steve writes.
POTUS Typographicus was heavy with a kind of critical attitude that seems motivated by this nauseating design elitism I've encountered elsewhere in professional designers.

 POTUS Typographicus | Metropolis Magazine
Whatever one thinks about this administration’s domestic and foreign policies, the White House’s garish type selections are so thoughtless they trivialize rather than enhance the rhetoric of our POTUS (no, not a synonym for doofus—or that substance he used to smoke—but rather the Secret Service’s acronym for President of the United States).

President Clinton won't be remembered for soaring, Lincolnesque rhetoric--even top speechwriter Michael Waldman admits that: "Clinton does not leave a long trail of chiseled phrases," writes Waldman in his memoir POTUS Speaks (POTUS is the acronym used in White House memos for President of the United States).
In this lively and entertaining memoir of his seven years of service in the White House as a speechwriter for POTUS (President of the United States), Waldman does not move much beyond the by now familiar story of the roller-coaster trajectory of Clinton's presidency.
POTUS Speaks is such an intriguing look at the behind the scenes work done in the West Wing.

The Democrats are still trying to find a way to placate the left without seeming unwilling to support the troops, and their latest proposal would pony up half of the needed war appropriations now and half in July, provided certain benchmarks are met.  Bush is not having any of it:
Nothing is more disappointing than seeing a formerly reasonable person lose control of his senses.  Joe Klein has always been a pretty calm oasis of sanity in the midst of the Bush Derangement Syndrome that has gripped much of the left, but I’m afraid I’ll have to start using the past tense after reading this piece:
