  Will's POVRay stuff
It has been made known by the POVRay team that the next major version will be written in C++ or some other OO language, and that's what I'm working with right now.
POVRay could also lighten its memory footprint in this manner, loading the necessary components only when they are needed, and unloading them when their task is complete.
This is known in the current POVRay source tree as the tokenizer, and it only needs to retrieve tokens from the current file, and return the appropriate token value.

 Patches and Extensions for POVRay
If you ever whished that POVRay would be so clever that it could paint the interesting parts of an image first and the not-so-interesting last, you should have a look at the progressive refinement patch.
POVRay's isosurfaces are very versatile objects because they allow to visualize the surface in space where an arbitrary user-supplied function in space has some threshold value (usually zero).
Inside POVRay, the user functions are evaluated using a virtual machine which interpretes "compiled" assembly of the function which is generated automatically at parsing stage.

POVRAY (Persistence of Vision RAYtracer) is a high-quality tool for creating three-dimensional graphics.
Some Povray input files produce thousands of warnings and create huge log files, in which case the -gw flag is very useful.
Some Povray jobs may require large amounts of memory, so the nodes and processors should be chosen carefully.

Had we configured Povray for SVGA then we could see that it is possible to view the image as it is being computed.
If anyone gets interested on configuring Povray for SVGA (I have not done it myself) the first thing that you will learn is that the speed of rendering depends on the region of the image, complex regions take longer than simpler regions.
Povray limits itself to generate a sequence of images and save them to the disk one at a time.

In the case of Povray, it is possible to use modelers from different independent companies or format filters, and in general the user has a great variety of tools available.
Povray's copyright is described in Appendix A of the manual, as Linux it is a freeware license.
Povray can display in SVGA mode but this is a card-dependent issue.

I worked with the POVRay team for a few more years to help with the development, then I moved on to other projects.
POVRay was even used in space to render an image for a poster.
Whenever I give courses or talks and I mention that I was involved with POVRay, there's inevitably someone there who knows about it or has used it.

 Modelling in Povray
When people first start to model in Povray (or other raytracers for that matter), they often have a naive conception of its lighting model, which is usually too optimistic.
Povray is capable of modelling several interesting transparency effects.
Povray also supports radiosity, which is a completely separate lighting model that may be seen as complementary to raytracing.

POVRay takes the camera position you provide and shoots rays of light, one for each pixel in your image, backwards from the camera onto the objects you position in front of the camera.
Because POVRay is open-source, there is a huge library of third-party add-ons, such as wireframe modeling tools, pre-built objects and scenes, and niche programs that simulate or generate just about anything you can think of – some worthless, some professional grade.
POVRay is so feature-rich and its creative paradigm so free of constraints that recommending it is like recommending oil painting: you have some basic materials with which to create a masterpiece...

POV-Ray: Newsgroups: povray.general: Can I bake UV textures with Povray?
A typical uv map takes its coordinates from <0,0> to <1,1>, so rendering an orthographic view of the <0,0,0>,<1,1,0> area of plane{z,0} textured with the desired procedural pigment or normal should create a bitmap version of that pigment or normal, usable for uv mapping.
Well, Tor Olav, your first example gives me a nice textured torus, albeit with some seams, and the second gives me a sphere that looks like a planet, but what I really want to do it actually save the UV-mapped texture itself, not the 3D render.
It would certainly be a useful feature for times when you want to animate a mesh and have the texture remain static on it, yet still have textured it procedurally.

POVray still doesn't show up as a render option though the plugin seems to install correctly.
My suggested workaround is to have the Windows version of Povray open at the same time as Wings3d and simply reload the file each time you do an export.

Parallel rendering using POVRAY on a computer farm   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Given a number of computers and a demanding POVRAY scene to render, there are a number of techniques to distribute the rendering among the available resources.
Two common methods are: using rsh with the povray command line prompt, or writing a simple application for parallel libraries such as MPI or PVM.
PovRay will normally reuse traced rays when it can for adjacent pixels, for example, the filled circles below are only calculated once when PovRay is calculating the pixels shown (blue) but they will calculated twice if the image is split and the pixels calculated separately.

 POVBench
The POVRay benchmark database gives a useful guide to the relative maths performance of various computers, processors and compilers by timing how long it takes for POVRay to render a standard image with standard parameters.
POVRay is a superb raytracing package that creates stunning images, but it requires as much CPU power as you can throw at it.
Then PovRay 3.5 came out with one already built in, and at last there won't be anymore confusion over command line parameters, which I suspect was leading to some silly times.

 Progressive refinement patch for POVRay
The PRT patch draws a progressively refining bilinearly interpolated preview and enables you to select regions to be traced by POVRay using the mouse.
The idea behind PRT is quite simple: Those regions of an image which have a higher color variation are normally the more interesting parts while the ones with little color variation can easily be interpolated.
While this is also true for the standard POVRay X11 display, PRT needs to store the image in better quality than 24 bit RGB.

Yes I have patched several files to make POVRay 3.6 working under Syllable, but no documentation is available for Builder to explain how theses patches are taken by the script.
If you added completely new files to the ported software, the easiest way to manage them is not to include them in the recursive diff, but to put them in a subdirectory called patches in the recipe directory.

This is slightly off-topic, but I don't think povray can be used for this purpose, i.e.
povray is merely a renderer for 3D scenes.
But the fact that is purely code driver, rather like TeX, means that we can potentially have pov files written out by TeX, rendered by povray, and the files read back in by TeX. I have a feeling this can open up a lot of possibilities in adding graphics to documents, e.g.

Linode.com Discussion :: View topic - povray render farm?
There was a discussion a while back about perhaps having a gcc compile farm with Linode machines, but it was decided that it would be a bad idea as the machines couldn't necessarily be trusted, which is obviously very important when it comes to executable code.
My question is, what would people think of a povray render farm, perhaps set up with the pvmpov patch or similar?
I've noticed my own Linode respond quite a bit slower when the host I'm on has a higher load average than normal (that has happened a couple of times), and that's not something I as a Linode customer would want as an experience on a daily basis.
