  Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark - NE Rails
PRR M1/M1a 4-8-2's were rare on the Curve (in freight service).
But they went into freight service pretty quickly and were utilized mainly in fast freight service on the more level areas of the PRR due to their horsepower and speed.
The diesel's ability to be "lashed-up" into as much power as needed controlled by 1 engine crew and its ability to add dynamic braking on the downhill side sealed steam's fate on the Curve and everywhere else for all time.

 STEAM LOCOMOTIVES
The latter were never duplicated (PRR passenger locomotive needs were met until after WWII by electric locomotives operating on the Harrisburg-Washington-New York electrified lines).
The first big tenders on the PRR carried 21,000 gallons of water, and were bought with the M1a engines in 1930.
Later 25,000 gallon tenders were built for use on K4s Pacific type passenger locomotives, but it was soon realized that carrying all that water around at 60-80 miles per hour was not such a good idea.

The equipment was moved by the Penn-Central railroad to Leaman Place Junction where the Strasburg Railroad and the mighty Baldwin # 90 hauled the collection of PRR equipment and placed it on display tracks on their property until the museum was completed.
For a short time PRR E7s back dated (to look like E6 # 7002) and D16s #1223 operated on the Strasburg Railroad until their second retirement in the early 1990's occurred.
Today there are only 2 operable PRR steamers the famous K4s PRR 1361 (462 pacific) and PRR #643 060 switcher.1361 is undergoing rebuilding presently at Steamtown NHS in Scranton PA.

John does distinctly remembers when PRR K4s came to York, PA in August of 1988.
He kicks himself now when thinking about it, but the day his father had a chance to fire on a trip, he could have been in the cab, but was deathly scared of a big, loud, noisy engine.
John hopes to introduce prototypically correct buildings of the PRR and other roads, that have yet to be produced otherwise.

"In all, 425 K4s locomotives were built which is the largest number of steam passenger engines of one class to be built by any railroad in this country." Albrecht provides short captions for most photographs, technical specification for K4s and K4sa and their tenders, and a roster of class K4s locomotives as of January 1939.
In addition he provides very brief information about the Horseshoe Curve and locomotive No. 1361 which was built in Altoona in 1918 and was given to the city of Altoona in 1957 as a permanent monument after rolling up 2,469,000 miles of passenger service.

Another experimental locomotive Pacific (class K29) was purchased in 1911 for further analysis and the K4s design was primarily the result of the extensive tests of the experimental K29.
By May 1928 a total of 426 class K4s locomotives were on the roster.

I have a PRR Chicago Division,Western Region interlocking book from the 1960s and it does say the KOUTS Tower is operated PRR 50% and Erie RR 50%, so maybe there was a Erie RR employee working the tower, but I'm not sure.
PRR connection - the railroad station which houses the museum was designed by Raymond Loewy in the forties according to the article and one of my favorite pictures Link shot is of the four side by side GG1 noses from a low angle in Pennsy Power.

Taken in South Amboy, NJ, PRR K4s 5413 has just taken over the train from GG1 power that has brought it to South Amboy from Penn Station.
This is a shot taken at the Cleveland Union Terminal enginehouse by David Sweetland in 1956.
The PRR had its main electric shop in Wilmington, DE where Carl Sturner, founder of Audio Visual Designs, took this photo in 1967.

However, I was once told, and not sure how true it is, that all the porthole windows used on the PRR (B60 Baggage, N5c, etc) were all the same size and it happened to coincide with the diameter of the glass used in the electric headlights.
The PRR began an extensive installation of cab signals but petitioned the ICC to allow it to install just cab signals without the train control feature, in return for the extensive installation of cabs.

They were named for William F. Kiesel, Jr, a PRR mechanical engineer who designed both the tenders and the trucks.

Then the C&O 2-6-6-6.followed by the PRR K4s.Then the N&W 4-8-0.I know you ask for one but I couldn't contain myself.But, the best road would have to be the C&O for steam.
From an engineering standpoint, the most modern, and most powerful in horsepower, was the PRR Q2 4-4-6-4 duplex.
For looks, I'd vote for a PRR M1a with coast-to-coast tender and passenger paint with striping.

 Surviving PRR Steamers
airgrounds, Waynesburg, PA 2-6-0ng PRR fairgrounds, Waynesburg, PA "...PRR (Waynesburg and Washington Railroad) locomotive stored at the the Greene County Historical Society Museum at the Greene County Farigrounds in Waynesburg, PA. It was the second number 4 for the WandW, but it has the PRR number of 9684.
Boiler pressure is 150psi, it's tractive force is 10,500 and its total weight is 51,150lbs.It was stored in the PRR shops in Canton, OH from 1933 to 1939.
It was donated to the Green County (PA) Historical Society and put on display at the Green County fairgrounds August 14, 1958.

Here are Bob's daughters Kimberly and Stephanie in front of the PRR K4s #3750, one of the famous fleet of PRR 4-6-2 Pacific-type steamers.
This one is a bit older than the one still running on the Strasburg RR; it's the Virginia and Truckee Tahoe, a 2-6-0 Mogul-type steamer.

The K4s is barely visible as a elongated fl dot at the top of the white rectangle; GP9 #7048 was substituted for the K4s on 16 Sep 85 so that the big Pacific could be restored for fantrip service.
Now, the darker grey triangular swath to the left of the Curve is the top of the mountain (Kittaning Point), and the light grey bar to the left of the tracks, opposite the upper park, is the sheer 100' high rock face of the cut.
On the opposite (south) side of Sugar Run is the old PRR Muleshoe Curve, which was the RoW of the now-abandoned PRR New Portage Branch, previously the New Portage Railroad.

In the following video, if you imagine yourself shrunk by a factor of 48 and sitting in the cab of the MTH Premier PRR FF2 sitting on Track 3, this is very much what you would have seen in a run around the layout.
The articulated steamer pulling the tank cars on Track 1 is the MTH Premier Northern Pacific Yellowstone; the steamer pulling the CandO passenger cars on Track 2 is the MTH Premier CandO Greenbrier #614, converted from PS1 to PS2.
