Topic: PRR Q2

Duplex Steam Locomotive / Steam discussion - Trains.com Forums
The 4-4-4-4s were all PRR T1s except one; the Baltimore and Ohio had one class N-1 4-4-4-4 whose rear cylinders were located beneath the firebox and drove the rear two pairs of driving wheels.
The Q2 (and the T1 as well) were higher speed locomotives and if they couldn't operate at that speed range, they tended to use more coal and water per unit of out put than conventional, similar sized locomotives.
PRR changed direction and committed to diesels about the time the final T1 was placed in service.

 O PRR Q2 History
After decades of conservative locomotive practice, the new Q-2's embodied many radical practices to the Pennsylvania, such as Timken roller bearings on all axles, floating bushings on all valve gear pins, Worthington SA feedwater heaters, combustion chambers and Franklin Type E boosters on the trailing engine truck.
While very economical on coal, the big 4-4-6-4's were the opposite with water and after as little as one and half hours of hard use, were in need of replenishment.
With delivery of new diesel freight locomotives, the PRR decided to set aside their most modern and complex locomotives and by the end of summer of 1949, all were in storage, most of them at Crestline, Ohio.

Duplex locomotive - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The PRR's requirements were the use of the Belpaire firebox and the Franklin oscillating-cam poppet valve gear.
What is undeniable is that the PRR very soon did not care; the much easier solution of the diesel locomotive was taken within months of the production locomotives being delivered, and within 2 years all principal passenger trains were diesel-hauled.
The PRR also desired to apply the duplex principle to freight haulage, and the Q1 was the first experiment in that direction.

The first experimental duplex on the PRR was the S1, a huge rigid frame duplex locomotive of the 6-4-4-6 wheel arrangement.
This locomotive was built by the PRR at Altoona in 1939; it was hailed as the largest locomotive ever built.
The next duplex on the PRR was also their last fling with the rigid frame duplexes, the Q2.

The first big tenders on the PRR carried 21,000 gallons of water, and were bought with the M1a engines in 1930.

In contrast to the contemporary PRR locomotives and cars were several examples of historic equipment, including a wooden Cumberland Valley Railroad Combination Coach originally built in 1855, six late 19th Century wooden passenger cars, and a class H3 freight steam locomotive built in 1887.
Penn Central had other plans for the bulk of the artifacts and by September of 1969 it appeared that a significant part of the PRR collection was earmarked for inclusion into the collection of the National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, Missouri.
The PRR collection was moved piecemeal with the first locomotives arriving in October of 1969 and the other pieces arriving in various stages through 1975 when the first section of the museum exhibit hall was completed.

In the period just before WWI and through WWII, PRR steam locomotives and tenders carried marker and classification lights that were unique; large metal globes (spheres) with four lens positions at each quadrant, a tab to rotate them and lock them in position at 90° increments, and a heavy clawfoot base for mounting.
According to a 1910 PRR Book of Rules I have, at that time locos had a set of marker lights on the pilot beam; these displayed red to the front and green to the sides and rear.
PRR's style was more of a block form, based on comparisons with several photos of steam diesel and electric locomotives from 1920 through the 1950's.

Too Super, Man? | Columns | SCI FI Weekly
A typical diesel locomotive today generates around 3 to 5 megawatts of power, and in 1938, when Superman had his comic-book debut, the most common train pullers were still steam engines rated at 300 to 2,000 horsepower, or 0.2-1.5 megawatts.
The most powerful engine at that time was the 8,000-horsepower (5.9-megawatt) PRR Class Q2 (actually introduced in 1944, but what the heck).
Based on this, we can estimate that Superman generates over 6 megawatts, or 30,000 times the maximum sustained output of a fit human bicyclist.
