The Harpoon seved in the south pacific theater in anti-submarine, and anti-shipping opperations.

Eventually the aircraft were operated by No.s 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, and 9 BR Squadrons and No.1 (B) OTU.
This version had the wingspan increased by 9 feet, increased fuel capacity, greater fin and rudder area, and improved armament (five.50 cal forward firing machine guns in the nose, two 50 cal machine guns in both dorsal turret and ventral position, and up to four 1000 lb.
The PV-2 served primarily in the Pacific theater, and was well-used until the end of the war.

Harpoons based in the Aleutians were used to bomb the Japanese home islands by equipping them with long range fuel tanks.
During the last few months of WWII, Harpoons carried out bombing and rocket attacks on the Japanese Kurile Islands, Truk Island, Wake Island, and others, along with performing the important duty of patrolling the shipping lanes near Guam, Siapan, and other American bases.
When confronted by a Japanese Zero, sufficient power could be added for the plane to out run the Zero, but these high power settings usually resulted in an engine change if the escape was successful.

The Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon was introduced late in WWII as a follow up patrol bomber to the PV-1 Ventura, which was used extensively by both the US Navy and British as a land based anti-submarine/shipping aircraft.

The Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon (Model 15-27-01) was a major redesign of the PV-1 Ventura to optimize it for the maritime reconnaissance role.
Like its predecessors, the PV-2 Harpoon was built by Lockheed's Vega subsidiary, which by now had been absorbed into the Lockheed complex as Plant A-1.

A flaw in the wing structure prevented sealing of the internal fuel tanks and it delayed actual operation of the aircraft for a few months.
The first 30 Harpoons had already been delivered with the structural problem and these aircraft were designated as PV-2Cs and were used for training.
An additional problem with wing spars caused squadrons operating Harpoons to ground the aircraft between April and May 1945.

In keeping with the redesignations, transition to a new aircraft, and reassignment of basic mission to antisubmarine warfare, a new squadron insignia was deemed appropriate.
