 AMHF - Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon
Designed as an extended range replacement for the PV-1, the Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon entered military service with the Navy in March, 1945.
In 1990, a group of pilots who had formed the nucleus of the AMHF purchased a PV-2 (N2697C) from it's owners in Tyler, Texas where it had been partially restored.
Harpoons based in the Aleutians were used to bomb the Japanese home islands by equipping them with long range fuel tanks.

 Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon
The Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon (Model 15-27-01) was a major redesign of the PV-1 Ventura to optimize it for the maritime reconnaissance role.
Like its predecessors, the PV-2 Harpoon was built by Lockheed's Vega subsidiary, which by now had been absorbed into the Lockheed complex as Plant A-1.
The combat use of the Harpoon by the Navy was fairly brief, and was cut short by the end of the war in the Pacific.

The PV-2 served primarily in the Pacific theater, and was well-used until the end of the war.
Eventually the aircraft were operated by No.s 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, and 9 BR Squadrons and No.1 (B) OTU.
This version had the wingspan increased by 9 feet, increased fuel capacity, greater fin and rudder area, and improved armament (five.50 cal forward firing machine guns in the nose, two 50 cal machine guns in both dorsal turret and ventral position, and up to four 1000 lb.

This site is dedicated to the history of the Lockheed PV-2 "Harpoon." One of the most over-looked aircraft of World War Two, this aircraft soldiered on with numerous air arms around the world into the late 1960s.
Harpoon's continued to battle fires and agricultural pests into the 1990s.
Now retired from its "combat" duties, most surviving 'Poons sit neglected at airports throughout the western United States.

The PV-2 Harpoon was a major redesign of the Ventura with the wing area increased from 551 ft² (51.2 m²) to 686 ft² (63.7 m²) giving an increased load-carrying capability.
A restored RNZAF Harpoon is owned by the Museum of Transport and Technology in Auckland.
The Royal New Zealand Air Force in the Pacific received 139 Venturas and some Harpoons from 1943 to replace Lockheed Hudsons in the maratime patrol bomber and medium bomber roles.

The Ventura's successor, the PV-2 Harpoon, also received some executive conversions, though the majority of civilianised aircraft became freight haulers, crop dusters or were used for insect eradication.
However one impressive bespoke conversion was the Howard Super Harpoon, with picture windows, large four-bladed paddle props and a fuselage extension of 6ft (1.8m), it was basically the Super Ventura concept built into a Harpoon.
Howard also acquired a number of Harpoons in the late 1950s but most of them remained unconverted or gave up under-carriage parts to the Howard 500 aircraft.

The PV-2 Harpoon and PV-1,3, B-34 Lexington (USAAF version of the PV Harpoon/Ventura) and B-37 Ventura were sea patrol and ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare) aircraft, developed from the model 18 Lodestar.
Lockheed B-34 Lexington was a USAAF version of the PV-2 Harpoon, Lockheed B-37 Ventura was developed from B-34.
Compared with the A-28 and A-29 Hudson the Ventura was more powerful and better armed, but it had a shorter range because it did not carry more fuel.

The first 30 Harpoons had already been delivered with the structural problem and these aircraft were designated as PV-2Cs and were used for training.
An additional problem with wing spars caused squadrons operating Harpoons to ground the aircraft between April and May 1945.
Soon after the PV-1 entered service, Lockheed began designing a new aircraft that would better fit the needs of the U.S. Navy.

The first of the PV-2 "Harpoons", larger and more heavily armed than the PV-1s, were ordered in June 1943 and reached Navy squadrons beginning in March 1944.
By war's end some 17 squadrons were equipped with PV aircraft, and "Harpoons" flew with Naval Air Reserve Units into the 1950s.
Given the press of world events, the British seized the opportunity to procure the aircraft, and by July 1941 the first "Venturas", as the aircraft was nicknamed, rolled off the assembly line complete with Royal Air Force camouflage markings.

On September 4, 1947, Ensign Richard Donelson and his co-pilot, Lieutenant Raymond Soelter, ditched a PV-2 Harpoon roughly 1,000 yards north of the end of the runway at Sand Point.

 Lockheed PV Ventura / Harpoon by Jack McKillop
Initially, the PV squadrons were tasked with supporting the Allied recapture of Attu and Kiska Islands and they flew photographic reconnaissance, patrol and bombing missions to those islands.
IV which had a range of 1 to 2 miles (1.6 to 3.2 kilometers); these aircraft also were equipped with an additional four fixed 50 caliber (12.7 mm) machine guns in the nose.
All but two of the PV squadrons serving in the Atlantic were established at NAS Deland, Florida, and received their primary training there.

In the early 60's Johnson purchased an entire squadron of Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon patrol bombers from the U.S. Navy.
     Johnson operated several smaller aircraft in addition to former WWII bombers such as B-18's, B-17 Flying Fortress,' C-82 Flying Boxcar's, "Aldrin Annie" the C-122, B-25 Mitchell's, B-26 Invader's, DC-3's, DC-4's, and Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon's to name a few.
Johnson donated one of his famous Harpoon attack bombers to the Pima Air Museum located near Davis - Monthan Air Base in Tucson, Arizona.

VPB-130 was redesignated VP-130, then VPML- 2, and transitioned from the PV-2 Harpoon to the P2V Neptune patrol bomber.
In keeping with the redesignations, transition to a new aircraft, and reassignment of basic mission to antisubmarine warfare, a new squadron insignia was deemed appropriate.

The Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) received 116 PV-1s with serials NZ4501/NZ4582 and NZ4606/NZ4639.
1, 2, 3, 4, 8 and 9 Squadrons and saw extensive service in the Solomons where they flew bombing, reconnaissance and air rescue duties.

In all, 15 PV squadrons were formed for Atlantic operations consisting of VB/VPB-125, 126, 127, 128, 129, 130, 131, 132, 133, 134, 141, 143, 145, 147, and 149.
The first Atlantic-based PV-1 squadron to successfully attack an enemy submarine was VB-125.
