Unfortunately, unlike in Telengana, the PWG's traditional stronghold, the police as well as the civil administration are not adequately sensitive to the rising trend of Naxalite presence and violence in their jurisdiction, as in some other parts of the state.
Presently, the PWG is battling for survival in its former strongholds, attempting to make ingress into new areas and struggling to revive its activities in areas from which it has been ejected.
The PWG and the Maoists are among the leading members of the Coordination Committee of Maoist Parties and Organisations of South Asia (CCOMPOSA), a group whose formation was announced on July 1, 2001.

The PWG champions the cause of the landless and targets landlords, law enforcement personnel and other symbols of authority in the northeast, east central and southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Orissa.
The PWG also used land mines to kill police, and insurgents used bombs to kill government officials, police, and civilians.
The PWG intensified its attacks after three top commanders were killed 02 December 1999, in an encounter with police officers in Andhra Pradesh State and has been responsible for dozens of incidents of violence since then.

The new Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy-led Congress government in Andhra Pradesh, where the PWG was born more than 20 years ago under the leadership of the late Kondapalli Seetharamiah, announced on July 21 that the ban on the outfit and six of its frontal organisations would be allowed to lapse.
The decision paved the way for a three-month ceasefire by the PWG and the Andhra government and set the stage for peace talks in the state.
