Ford Motor Company - Featured Story - Ford Offers Second-Generation PZEV Focus
Actually, the new PZEV Focus is the second iteration of the company’s exceptionally clean-burning small car.
The second-generation Focus PZEV engine is a key element of the 2005 Focus fleet that is estimated to produce 32 percent fewer smog-forming emissions than its 2004 fleet, which already was exceptionally clean.
In contrast, the difference between the 2005 2.0-liter I-4 and its PZEV brother is a mere two components.

The Focus PZEV is rated for 27/36 mpg vs. hybrids which achieve somewhere between 40 and 60 mpg, depending on the model.
The Ford Focus PZEV does not qualify for the $1,500 clean air tax break, in part because it emits the usual amounts of carbon dioxide which cause global warming.

Another is the 2.3-liter Ford Focus, which comes standard as a PZEV in the aforementioned states, with the same engine and fuel system optional in all others.
With the number of PZEV models now approaching 20 and growing, this is no longer just a blip on the emissions radar.

The Focus PZEV is so clean, it would take 330 of them running at the same time to equal the smog-forming emissions of one typical 1971 car, the first California emission controlled vehicle.

PZEV stands for partial zero-emission vehicle, and it is the highest standard for gasoline-engine vehicles.
To qualify as a PZEV, a vehicle must first meet the super-ultra-low-emission vehicle standard: 97 percent fewer hydrocarbon emissions, 76 percent less carbon dioxide and 97 percent less nitrogen oxide than the national Tier 1 emission standard.
In some atmospheric conditions -- a brown day in Southern California, for instance -- PZEV vehicles actually clean the air, which is to say, their emissions are cleaner than the air sucked into the engine.

PZEV's are also marketed outside of California, partially to take advantage of economies of scale.

Automakers still face ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle) requirements in the state, though the regulations have been relaxed to allow them to use PZEVs (Partial Zero Emission Vehicles) to meet at least part of the obligation until hydrogen-fueled or fully electric vehicles are ready for prime time.
PZEV baseline requirements include certifying that the vehicle meets: (1) SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle) emission standards for 150,000 miles, (2) the state’s zero evaporative emission standards, and (3) OBD II requirements for SULEVs.

2004 Volvo S60 and V70 Receive EPA's Highest Ratings for Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) Engines
The PZEV technology, which earned Volvo Car Corporation's (VCC) development team the 2002 Henry Ford Technology Award, produces emissions that are lower in hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide than the air going into the engine.
The PZEV S60 and V70 also cut evaporative emissions to near-zero levels, enabling the vehicles to receive Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) credits from the California Air Resources Board (CARB).
For the moment, only S60s and V70s sold in California, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island are equipped with the PZEV system, but Volvo expects to widen its availability as more units are produced and the development costs drop accordingly.

Some PZEVS (such as the Toyota Prius) are classified as AT-PZEV, standing for Advanced Technology PZEV.

The Focus PZEV, powered by the company’s new Duratec 23E engine, was introduced in the spring of 2003 to help Ford meet California’s Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) mandate, which also has been adopted by New York, Vermont and Massachusetts.
Under the rule, the seven largest auto manufacturers were required to sell zero and near zero emissions vehicles in varying quantities based on a complex formula that took into account market share, when the vehicles were sold, as well as other factors.
The origin of PZEVs are rooted in a compromise reached between regulators and automakers recognizing that consumer demand was very low for battery-powered vehicles, which have high costs, limited ranges and need to be plugged-in to recharge.

 FORD'S PZEV DIESEL QUEST |
Carmakers have already achieved PZEV levels in some of their gasoline-engine models that are sold in California, and Wagner assumed that if his company can engineer diesel-hybrids that attain the same emissions standards that they should be able to be sold in California, which classifies diesel emissions as carcinogens.
While the folks at Ford are clearly excited about their PZEV diesel program and believe that interest in modern diesel engines is growing in America, they acknowledge that the current "aberration" in diesel fuel prices may cool some of that interest.
Whether or not they will someday build a PZEV diesel hybrid for the consumer market is yet to be seen, but its encouraging to see they are exploring all these options from hydrogen fuel cells to hydrogen-fueled IC engines to biodiesel hybrid-electrics.
