The FReeper Foxhole Remembers the Boeing P-26 Peashooter (1933-1942) - Jan. 6th, 2005
The Peashooter had the misfortune to be introduced into service at the beginning of one of the most explosive periods of development in the history of aviation technology.
The Peashooter appeared at the height of the Depression, when the various branches of the military were competing for the limited funds available from the government.
The Peashooter was also to be the last fighter aircraft mass-produced by Boeing before the company went on to bigger things, in both the figurative and the literal sense.

Designed in 1931, the Boeing P-26 Peashooter was a novel aircraft that incorporated some firsts in aviation.
The Peashooter fuselage is well designed, and the firewall is strong enough to handle just about any engine you choose; it has hard points installed in it for the upper flying wires.

Boeing: History -- Products - Boeing P-26 "Peashooter" Fighter
The all-metal, single-wing P-26, popularly known as the "Peashooter," was an entirely new design for Boeing, and its structure drew heavily on the Monomail.
The Peashooter's wings were braced with wire, rather than with the rigid struts used on other airplanes, so the airplane was lighter and had less drag.
One of a group of P-26s, turned over to the Philippine Army late in 1941, was among the first Allied fighters to down a Japanese airplane in World War II.

 This Fantastic Boeing P-26 Peashooter.
There were virtually no airfields with runways, and the rough grass airfields tended to overturn the 'Peashooter' unless the pilot was exceptionally skilled.
For this reason the P-26A was used mainly at bases with long strips of sun-baked earth in the southern and western United States, Hawaii and the Canal Zone.
Unlike the Monomail, B-9 and 247, the P-26 was not conceived entirely as a private venture by the Boeing Airplane Company, as it then was styled.

STAN STOKES AVIATION ART - Between War Classics (Boeing P-26 and Curtis Hawk)
In contrast the Boeing P-26 "Peashooter" was a very important transitional aircraft in the evolution of the fighter.
Many of these compromises would doom the aircraft to a very short useful life, as the P-26 was quickly made obsolete by the much faster Seversky P-35 and the Curtiss P-36 fighters which appeared in 1936.
Boeing engineers retained some very conservative design elements in the Peashooter's design such as a fixed landing gear and an open cockpit.
