The most important number of P39 in operations was certainly the Russian P39 not less than 5000 planes have been delivered to the URSS wich use them ase a close support and ground-attack plane, many of russian models have 2 x 12,7mm in gondolas under wing.
Late 1944 the P39 was replaced by the P63 " Kingcobra " from outside the two planes are very similar but the P63 was a new plane, and imporved at the P39 experience.
URSS received 2241 of the 3303 P63 built, 300 was delivered t the french " armee de l'air " and used by the Normandie-Niemen in Indochina.

  Bell XP-63 Kingcobra
The P-63 Kingcobra was the result of an attempt on the part of the Bell Aircraft Corporation to correct some of the deficiencies of the earlier P-39 Airacobra.
Although the Kingcobra had a superficial resemblance to the P-39 which preceeded, it was, in fact, a completely new design and no parts of the two aircraft were interchangeable.
Of the 3303 Kingcobras built, 2421 were supplied to the USSR under Lend-Lease and 114 went to the French.

The close sibling of the P-39 Airacobra, the Kingcobra was bigger and faster than its baby sister.
The sturdy and capable Kingcobra was flown mainly by the Russians on the Eastern Front of World War Two.
Production of the P-63 Kingcobra for the USAAC began in October of 1943, and nearly 3,300 aircraft were produced before the end of the war.

The P-63 "Kingcobra" was the successor to Bell Aircraft's earlier P-39 "Airacobra", and is similar in overall design.
The Soviets made good use of the P-63's heavy armament, good low-level performance and strong construction by employing it as a close-support ground attack aircraft, and it proved to be an effective tank killer.
The CAF "Kingcobra" based at WHS is a P-63F, one of only two ever built.

- Well, the p63 is blindingly fast, has a lot more ammo, resilience (and then some!) good roll and turn.
As weapons of war the p63 is undoubtably the superior machine with a higher top speed...
I gave the kingcobra a decent chance, but everytime I take it up I feel like I fight it more than the enemy.

Some sources claim that the Kingcobra fought on the Eastern Front and re-equipped P-39 squadrons.
There are also claims that the Kingcobras that the Soviets were able to get ready for combat in Europe were used for PVO squadrons and based around Moscow, with the planes used in August 1945 against Japan the only Soviet Kingcobras to experience combat.
All the sources agree that the Soviets promoted the achievements of their own aircraft after the war and that reports of the use of the Kingcobra may have suffered from this.

Comments: The Kingcobra was a huge improvement over the P-39 Airacobra.
Both put Bell aircraft on the map and were the only really successful fixed wing aircraft produced by the company.
Only recommended if you are willing to put in the work or want a toy for your kids.

I was expecting alot more "P63 is god" type talk - especially considering how many '39 drivers there are out there.
I spoke with Oleg a bit about the P63 - I know his team was doing a bit of testing on it.
Anyway - While the p63 is fast, and loses less with the.50 pods than the q1 - I think the p39 is still the more agile dogfighte.

P63 is a true killer in 1945 IMO.
Kingcobra retains energy very well, has a superb zoom climb, reasonable good climb, It is also among fastest prop planes (apart from MustangIII).
If you meet Fw190 on a same altitude 1v1, he has few options to stay alive.

Its engine was located behind the pilot leaving the slender front compartment available for machine gun fitment.

I have much interest in the Frangible Bullet program.I would like to hear from anyone that took part in the program.
Tecumseh, MI The P63 Kingcobra was (and hopefully is) an absolute pleasure to fly.
It has great visibilty from the cockpit and had enough more power than the P39 and was a joy to have a rat race with.

So why didn't the P39 Aircobra and the P63 KingCobra fare better with US Pilots?
The USAAC powers that be decided that the P39 didn't need the two stage supercharger that it was designed to use and that the prototype flew with.

I should do that for my electric P39 / P63.
I saw a video of one of the astronauts who happens to own a P51 and a P63 Kingcobra.

I saw TFC p63 kingcobra displaying at Duxford in 2000 and I loved it.
