just ate some paan earlier and i ate it with some industrial lime, which is supposed to make it kick in stronger, unfortuantely i ate a bit to much lime (PH 8-9) and burnt the shite out of the inside of my mouth.
Not that I am one avid paan eater, but when I do I have it the right way - put it in one corner of the mouth and suck at it ever so slowly and gently till all the juices seep into your mouth.
Paan has to be relished and suckled, if I may use that word.

Immediately when we walk in to Saleem, the guy was like "you're here for Baba Paan?" (oh, note the new corrected spelling....that's how "inside" we are), and we took a pass and went with two sweet paans.
While we were looking around and watching him make our paan, we saw a little slip of paper....a paan menu, if you will.
Looking at it, there's baba in it, as well as the silver flakes in the actual baba....but also, there are these silver and red balls in it that I don't have the foggiest idea as to what their purpose is. Probably to get you totally panned.

When I was first offered Paan by some Indian friends, I was hesitant, because it's the type of thing -- leaves soaked in water, uncooked, filled with raw and unknown ingredients -- that a weak Western stomach is trained, even implored, to avoid.
Queen Noorjehan discovered that by adding some ingredients to the Paan (probably betel nut I imagine), it enhanced the reddening of her lips, and was thus used by women as a beauty supplement.
A foreigner like me who tries Paan a couple of times of year doesn't have much to worry about, but the betel nut is addictive and carcinogenic, so more frequent indulgers should be careful.

In India, the potent sada paan is for those with a real habit; most others prefer the meetha paan.
I always ask for my meetha paan without any tobacco paste at all.
Back in Jakarta, with a big box of ‘Khajuri Paan’ secreted in the fridge, I can still experience the taste from time to time but miss the ‘real’ thing.

my grandma had a stroke while eating paan and it took the doctors a whole day to figure out what was in her mouth and why her tongue was green!...lol...luckily they had a desi doctor on staff...
