Berglund has performed the latter’s symphonies and tone poems with countless orchestras around the world and recorded the complete symphonic cycle no less than three times.
Berglund is 75 now and the weight of years really showed as he shuffled onto the platform to begin a flaccid, uninteresting account of Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3.
Berglund seemed remarkably invigorated when he took to the podium again, and from the moment the strings started playing their striking opening figure it was clear this was an entirely different calibre of performance.

Grandmaster of Finnish Sibelian conductors Paavo Berglund (b.1929) is comparatively not well-known among collectors of Sibelius records.
Berglund's recordings with the Bournemouth Symphony, with whom he is Conductor Emeritus, have been unavailable for so long that they have virtually reached mythical status.
Berglund's way of bringing out details in the score is unique to him, a result not only of his understanding of the Sibelian idiom, but his intricate familiarity with the music.

The name Paavo Berglund has become synonymous with the music of Jean Sibelius and he has had a long association with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra in his native Finland.
This movement was well paced by Berglund who coaxed the strings to play with great warmth and depth of feeling, but unfortunately it was marred by some very harsh horn intonation throughout.
The Andante mosso, quasi allegretto was perfectly paced, with Berglund making the music sound suitably menacing and brooding; again the horns took on an aptly rugged and stark quality; this was the most successfully rendered movement of an unevenly conducted symphony.

 SA-CD.net - Sibelius: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 7 - Berglund
Paavo Berglund has been intimately associated with the orchestral music of Sibelius for decades.
Berglund, of course, has been conducting these symphonies since the early 1950s and indeed he even wrote a book about the Seventh Symphony back in the 1960s.
Berglund understands that; his transitions are seamless, he maintains a steady pulse that underlies the entire symphony, even though the listener is generally not aware of that because of the multitude of changes in the materials being presented.

SIBELIUS Kullervo. 1972 and 1985 recordings by Berglund (EMI) - INKPOT
Though the music was composed and first performed in 1892, over one hundred years ago, Sibelius withdrew it from the world, and only allowed the third movement to be performed in celebration of the centenary of the publication of the Kalevala in 1935, when the composer himself was 60 years of age.
Paavo Berglund (left) recorded it again in June 1985 with EMI Records, in a much-acclaimed performance.
In any case, what satisfies me about Berglund's way with the work is how he brings so much underlying energy to the music, despite its fairly moderate pace and the simplicity of the devices Sibelius used to constuct the music.

Berglund, I believe, was the first to fully record a complete cycle of Sibelius symphonies.

Berglund recorded this with the Bournemouth SO in the early 70s; it was a 'world premiere'.
Here, Berglund portrays the tragedy of the rustic tale of accidental incest between Kullervo and his long-lost sister as though it really is taking place amongst the vast forested wilderness of Finland, whereas Vanska, for instance, is firmly rooted in his recording venue, carefully protecting the music from the elements.
Most of the (early 1970s) recordings here are definitive, especially the 'Finlandia'; conductor Paavo Berglund matching intensity with wit, colour with pace, and, in particular, bringing out the vibrancy of Sibelius's writing for wind and strings.
