While the Finns were greatly outnumbered, within 24 hours the Finns had held and in fact seemed to hold the advantage.
The Finns above the Palovaara road junction were under the command of Col. Paavo Susitaival (replacing a Finnish Major wounded on December 7th) and were designated Task Force Susi.
The Finns were lucky in many regards as the 662nd had been stripped of some of its soldiers so only had 2,000 men in the battle.

Under the direct command of the battalion commander, Lt.Col Susitaival, the 2./Er.P 16 advanced to the vicinity of the Palovaara crossroad during 16 Dec and 17th, while the weather was terrible for skiing.
Without communications to the rest of the battalion on the left and PPP 6 on the right, Susitaival decided to rest his weary troops and attack on 19 Dec.
Meanwhile, on 17 Dec, the 3./Er.P 16 was sent to interdict Soviet traffic on the road from Juntusranta to Linna at Lake Saarijärvi.

 The Finnish Winter War 1939-1940
The new unit was named Detachment Talvela, after it’s commander (the member of the war munitions department) Col.
Paavo Talvela (on the 19th it was again named the Group Talvela).
The unit was made up from Er.P 11(separate batallion 11), detachment Räsänen (3 batallions) and JR 16 lead by Col.Lt. Aaro Pajari and one large artillery unit both separated from 6.D. It’s orders were to destroy the enemy near Ilomantsi and move towards Suojärvi to recapture it with IV AC.

Now, I have a hunch that there was a book that had information on all three orders, but I can't remember what it was.
While on the subject of Finnish medals, three cheers for my friend's family; father-son-grandson hat-trick with the Cross of Freedom, 2nd class: V.O. Siven (1918), Paavo Susitaival (1942) and Håkon Susitaival (2000).
Interestingly, the two elder gentlemen also received an EK 2nd class in the same year as they got their CoF's.

It is very interesting but there is one lack: Siilasvuo "forgot" the whole Group Susi which attacked from the North led by Lt.Col. Paavo Susitaival.
Susitaival later fought an own book on the battles of his group.

The HQ of P-SR planned, on 19 Dec, to destroy the Soviet opposition by an attack from the north and NW.
As the JR 64 was attached to the 9.D, the TF Susi, led by Lt.Col. Paavo Susitaival, received only the JR 65, led by Lt.Col. K.Mandelin.
The TF Susi was consisted of JR 65, Er.P 16, 22nd Motorized Pioneer battalion, 8th Pioneer platoon, TO 7, TO Pessi and some supply formations.
