The new Group Talvela was reinforced by the JR 16, commanded by Lt.Col A.Pajari, also a Jaeger and an able veteran of the War of Independence, and one artillery battalion.
Talvela sent Pajari to stabilize the critical Tolvajärvi area, and in the evening on December 7th, Lt.Col Pajari arrived to Tolvajärvi and assumed the command of the units in the area.
By 9 December, the situation was stabilized, although still critical, and Talvela decided to boost the dwindling moral and gain the initiative, by an attack on 11 December.

Paavo Talvela met with Chief of Staff of OKH, Col. Gen Franz Halder and Göring January 15-18, 1941, and was asked about Finnish plans to defend itself in case of new Soviet invasion.
Talvela wasn't satisfied with aggressiveness of Koskimies, and he relieved him from the command and gave 5th Division to Col. Lagus.
All 11th, 5th and 1st divisions were committed at the time so Talvela had to scrape whatever forces he was able to get (including bridge building company) to throw attackers back to the lake.

Talvela knew Pajari and thought that he would be the best person to lead the attack with his regiment.

Most alarming for the Finnish High Command were the strength and speed with which the Soviet forces moved against the long frontier north of Lake Ladoga.
In what at the time seemed a near miracle, two Finnish regiments under Col. (later Gen.) Paavo Talvela beginning on December 12 attacked and destroyed the Soviet 139th Division at Tolvajarvi (now Tolvayarvi), and then defeated the 75th Division.
In a nearly month-long battle that began on December 11, a second small force under Col. (later Gen.) Hjalmar F. Siilasvuo encircled the Soviet 163d Division at Suomussalmi and destroyed the 44th Division, which had come to break the encirclement.

At the point of main effort Finnish delaying force consists of only one battalion (of the 5th Division), and it is soon forced to withdraw.
Talvela orders the 5th Division to fight for every inch, but, faced by enemy many times superior in numbers, it has to start withdrawing towards the PSS-line.
After the capture of Viipuri, Soviet forces on the Karelian Isthmus receive new orders.
