Tiberius Claudius Marinus Pacatianus was an usurper in the Danube area of the Roman Empire during the time of Philip the Arab, ca.
He is known from coins, and from mentions in Zosimus and Zonaras, who say that he was an officer in one of the Danube legions.
The revolts of Pacatianus and Iotapianus in Syria prompted Philip to offer to step down, but Decius (who would soon succeed Philip), correctly predicted that Pacatianus would soon be killed by his own men.

Pacatianus was raised to the purple by the troops of Moesia (Zosimus, Zonaras) and maybe also of Pannonia (Zosimus).
Their rebellions reveal the two main problems of the third century: (1) the invasions of the tribes from outside the empire caused unrest amongst the troops who had to protect the frontiers, and (2), the economic and financial crisis urged the emperors to raise high taxes amongst the provincials.

The rebellion of Pacatianus, like the later one of Decius, shows that among the troops in the Danube area there was a strong wish for the presence of the emperor with the soldiers (Castritius and Hartmann call this "Bedürfnis nach Kaisernähe"[[24]]).
Their rebellions reveal the two main problems of the third century: (1) the invasions of the tribes from outside the empire caused unrest among the troops who had to protect the frontiers, and (2), the economic and financial crisis caused the emperors to raise high taxes among the provincials.
Decius and Pacatianus were proclaimed emperor by the army and owed this to their military rank.

For the pope of this name see Pope Zosimus Zosimus, Greek historical writer, nourished at Constantinople during the second half of the 5th century A.D. According to Photius, he was a count, and held the office of advocate of the imperial treasury.
Iotapianus was not a military usurper like Pacatianus and Decius and had led a rebellion of provincials against the tax policy of Rome.
The uprising was crushed and Philip nominated Gaius Messius Quintus Decius Gaius Messius Quintus Trajanus Decius (201- July 1 251), Roman emperor (249 - 251) was born at Budalia near Sirmium in lower Pannonia.
