Al-Maris - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was a part of the Christian state of Makuria, and had earlier been part of Nobatia before that nation merged with Makuria.
The main towns were Bajrash (Pachoras, Faras) and Qasr Ibrim.
While the movement of the Arab armies southwards was halted by the bakt in 651 this did not stop the slow penetration of northern Nubia by Arabs.

The Dongola Cathedral, the Church of the Granite Columns and the Cathedral of Paulos in Pachoras which was modeled on it, are all built on a central plan, but furnished with a columnar naos and narthex, and numerous side annexes.
This type of cathedral, which was a creation of the Dongolan architectural milieu in the late seventh century, exerted a visible effect on the churches A and B in Soba in Alodia.
The murals preserved from this period in the Pachoras cathedral are among the finest in the entire kingdom.

The paintings from Faras and records concerning the Pachoras bishopric became in the 60s the most fascinating new material, literally putting Christian Nubia on the map of the Byzantine oikumene.
Both the foundations at Pachoras had narthexes leading into the church proper with a nave wider than the aisles.
The apse with altar was separated from the rest of the church by a triumphal arch.

Today it is clear that the Pachoras bishopric continued until 1372 and that the cathedral was rebuilt along different lines presumably at the turn of the 13th century, and served in its capacity as an episcopal church until the very end /
This is particularly obvious in the numerous portraits of eparchs of Nobadia who were domestikos of Pachoras at the same time, a fact that is satisfactorily documented in Old Nubian texts from Qasr Ibrim Browne 1991/.
It was undoubtedly an important residence of a bishop or perhaps domestikos of Pachoras where the ground floor was adapted to communication and storage facilities, with stores accessible from both the inside and in the case of a few rooms from the outside.

 Christian Nubia
Since the 6/7th century the kings from Dongola predominated also the state of Nobadia.
It was governed by an eparch from Makouria with the authority of a viceroy who resided in Faras (ancient Pachoras), the capital at that time of Nobadia.
When, in the 13/14th centuries the situation became unstable, due to invading nomads and power struggles among the members of the royal family of Makouria, the eparch of Faras moved to Qasr Ibrim (ancient Primis) and later to Gabal Adda.

There are the two well known examples at Faras Jakobielski, 1972: 37, built into the wall of the palatial structure close to the cathedral.
They record the foundation of a church in the eleventh year of the reign of Merkurios, when Markos was eparch, in the year 423 of the era of Diocletian, by the bishop of Pachoras, Paulos.
Although they are explicit in recording the construction of "this holy place was established as worthy for service in it of the Catholic and Apostolic Church" they were not built into the wall of the cathedral.
