Although the microhabitats of all Pachypodium species are arid, the overall habitats occupied by these plants are climatically and geologically diverse, ranging from granitic inselbergs isolated within montane rainforests of Madagascar to the hyper-arid Richtersveldt of southern Africa.
In light of the poor state of knowledge concerning the phylogenetics of Pachypodium, and the potential to learn about the evolution of arid-adapted plants on a large geographic scale, I propose to investigate the molecular systematics and biogeography of the genus.
I plan to sequence the trn L- trn T spacer region of the chloroplast DNA, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the ribosomal DNA, and one paralogue of the RNA polymerase B gene (RPB2-I).

One thing which I wish the publishers would change is the yellow text for some of the chapter headings which I find very hard to read, but that is a relatively minor quibble in what is otherwise a very well designed and produced book.
Whilst the text of this was good it suffered from being in a small format and only having rather poor contrast fl and white illustrations (possibly due to conversion from colour slides which tends not to produce good results).
