Part I of this paper, "Maritime Explorations of the Coast of Japan in the Late 18th Century" was prepared for the NASOH ‘98 Conference held in San Diego, in April, 1998 by the North American Society for Oceanic History.
La Perrouse had sailed by the northern coast of Hokkaido in 1787 but Broughton was determined to provide an English survey of the region including the passage between Hokkaido and Honshu and the coastline of this mysterious island called by various names such as Yesso, Ezo, and Insu by the native Ainu islanders.

While many PCL stars went on to play in the major leagues, teams in the league were often successful enough that they could offer competitive salaries to avoid being outbid for their stars' services.
In addition, the mild climate of the West Coast, especially in California, allowed the league to play longer seasons, sometimes starting in late February and ending as late as the beginning of December.

October 7, 2004 - The Pacific Coast League has announced a realignment of its divisions for the 2005 season as the Round Rock Express joins the ranks of Triple-A Baseball.
The Isotopes are the only team to remain in the division from last year, while the RedHawks and Zephyrs enter the group after playing in the Eastern Division since the two teams joined the League seven years ago.
The Pacific Conference Southern Division will remain the only group untouched by the changes, continuing to be the home of Fresno, Las Vegas, Tucson, and 2004 PCL Champion Sacramento.

After two seasons of competition, the Pacific Coast Softball Conference has received an automatic qualifier (AQ) for NCAA postseason play, Commissioner Wendy Guthrie announced on October 6.
The junior led the Lions to a second place conference finish after leading the PCSC in slugging percentage (.862), on base percentage (.571), runs scored (21), RBI (20), home-runs (6), and total bases (50).
