The Pacific Coast Hockey Association was a professional ice hockey league in western Canada, operating from 1911 to 1924 when it merged with the Western Canada Hockey League.
During this time, the PCHL was considered to be one of the major leagues of hockey.

They chose to be an amateur league mainly because the NHL had claimed territorial rights to Seattle, Vancouver, and Portland (Lester Patrick had operated in those cities when he ran the PCHA league, and the NHL considered that territory as belonging to Patrick).
The PCHL actually grew out of the Southern California Hockey League (which operated from 1942-43 to 1943-44 and included teams in Hollywood, Los Angeles, Pasadena, and San Diego) and the Northwest International Hockey League, which operated in 1943-44 in Vancouver (Washington), Seattle, and Portland.
The league's first season was a success, and the level of play was much improved from that of the 1944-45 season, even though the players were paid roughly the same as when they were amateurs.

Patrick, Lester (b at Drummondville, Qué 30 Dec 1883; d at Victoria 1 June 1960), patriarch of a family which dominated the early development of HOCKEY as players and managers.
With their father's support (he was a millionaire lumberman) they formed the Pacific Coast Hockey League in 1911.
They built arenas for all teams in the league and Lester played for Victoria, Spokane and Seattle before settling as player-coach and manager in Victoria, where the brothers built Canada's first artificial ice rink.
