Pacific Coast League - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Pacific Coast League (PCL) is a minor league baseball league operating in the West and Midwest of the United States.
While many PCL stars went on to play in the major leagues, teams in the league were often successful enough that they could offer competitive salaries to avoid being outbid for their stars' services.
The league is divided into two conferences, the American Conference and Pacific Conference; after a realignment for 2005 necessitated by the move of the Edmonton Trappers to Round Rock, Texas, each is divided into a Northern Division and a Southern Division.

The league feared the NL or AL moving one of their clubs into a PCL market, using the air service to keep the team in schedule with the other 15 in the majors.
They also knew that the PCL would be hard-pressed to call itself a major league unless players from the other clubs who were the top talent of the day came out and graced the ballparks with their aura.

Each team in the league loaned players to the Shamrocks until their regular squad was able to return to play.
The league's first season was a success, and the level of play was much improved from that of the 1944-45 season, even though the players were paid roughly the same as when they were amateurs.

The PCL has generally received much more publicity than the International League and American Association - until the '50s, it was home to the best baseball on the west coast and it also featured bigger cities than the other top-tier minors.
As a result some have proclaimed it the top minor league, especially in its pre-1957 "heyday." A brief study of the rosters of the PCL, AA and IL for these years would seem to indicate that the talent level was probably pretty equivalent.
The PCL was the only minor league ever to be given the classification of "Open" - an experiment conducted from 1952-57 to have a tier nominally above AAA.

What's interesting about this league, as opposed to other minor leagues is that from its creation in 1903 until 1958, when the Giants and Dodgers moved west is that it was really an "independent" league in a lot of ways.
The teams would sign their own players and those needing more "seasoning" were sent to one of the league's "farm teams," usually teams in the low minors.
Interestingly enough, the league owners were concerned that Portland and Sacramento wouldn't be able to support major league teams and were looking at Denver and Dallas as cities to replace those two cities if they gained major league status.
