The Pacific Diver ( Gavia pacifica), known in North America as the Pacific Loon, is a medium-sized member of the loon, or diver, family.
It may be conspecific with Black-throated Diver, which it closely resembles.
Gavia : Latin for sea smew (although divers are not Smew); pacifica : Latin, meaning of the Pacific.

Pacific Reach is the first multination submarine rescue exercise held in the Pacific region and includes 600 participants, four submarines, four surface support ships and other submarine rescue systems from the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force, the Republic of Korea Navy, the U.S. Navy and the Republic of Singapore Navy.
Pacific Reach is currently taking place 200 miles off the coast of Singapore and includes submarines, support ships and additional submarine rescue units from Korea, Japan, Singapore and the United States.
Pacific Reach is being held in the waters off Singapore and includes 600 participants, four submarines, four surface support ships and other submarine rescue systems from the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force, the Republic of Korea Navy, the U.S. Navy and the Republic of Singapore Navy.

Smoky Bay is a known haunt of the great white shark, which has been blamed for a string of recent attacks - although the authorities could not confirm the species of shark behind this latest incident.
Two surfers died after attacks on two days in September 2000, a windsurfer was taken in May 1999, and another diver killed in June 1998.

The duties vary but, in general, the divers are responsible for food preparation, feeding the animals in various exhibits, giving the “diver talk” presentations from inside the Blue Cavern and Tropical Reef exhibits (by using a specially-wired mask), keeping the exhibits clean, and whatever else needs to be done during a four-hour shift.
Although many of the volunteer divers are Instructors and Divemasters, the basic requirements are that you be at least 18, certified as a Rescue Diver or above, and have a minimum of 50 logged dives.
But what draws divers initially is not only their love of the ocean, but a unique opportunity to interact with marine life on a regular basis and in a way totally unavailable in the wild.

While marine life observed underwater was not overly large, from the boat deck divers enjoyed sightings of humpback and minke whales, blue sharks, Pacific white-sided dolphins riding the bow wave and on one occasion a white blob turned out to be an ocean sunfish (mola mola) the size of a dining room table.
Divers wore twin tanks each rigged with separate regulator, breathed air and decompressed on 40 per cent Nitrox.
The team had hoped for up to six days of diving but in an area notorious for stormy seas, they were gratified with the rich haul of specimens, still and video images and unforgettable experiences they accumulated.
