In 1990, electric rail passenger train service once again became available to the citizens of Los Angeles with the opening of the Metro Blue Line, which runs from downtown Los Angeles to Long Beach using mostly the same trackage as the original Pacific Electric line that was removed in 1961.

Now primarily a freight railway, the CPR was for many decades the only practical means of long distance passenger transport in many regions of Canada, and was instrumental in the settlement and development of western Canada.
