Gull - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most gulls, particularly Larus species, are ground nesting omnivores, which will take live food or scavenge opportunistically.
Apart from the kittiwakes, gulls are typically coastal or inland species, rarely venturing far out to sea.
Gulls — the larger species in particular, are resourceful and highly-intelligent birds, demonstrating complex methods of communication and a highly-developed social structure.

Birds of Cockatoo Island: Pacific Gull
Sometimes mistaken for an Albatross by non bird watchers, the fl and white Pacific Gull is a very large gull, but a bird of the shore rather than of the oceans.
The Pacific Gull is much less common and is shyer than the abundant and aggressive Silver Gull, and is restricted to the seashores of the southern half of Australia.
Pacific Gulls feed on a range of animal food, including clams, snails and sea urchins that they break by dropping onto rocks while in flight.

The Silver Gull has a white head, tail and underparts, with a light grey back and fl-tipped wings.
The Silver Gull is a common sight at virtually any watered habitat throughout Australia and is rarely seen far from land.
As with many other gull species, the Silver Gull has become a successful scavenger, readily pestering humans for handouts of scraps, pilfering from unattended food containers or searching for human refuse at tips.

The greatest numbers of kelp gulls in Australia are now found in south-eastern Tasmania in sympatry with the two endemic species, the morphologically similar Pacific gull, L.
There was, however, a marked increase in the number of kelp gulls at tips, equivalent to an annual rate of increase of 22.8%, and a corresponding decrease in the number of silver gulls.
At shoreline sites, adult Pacific gulls appeared to exclude kelp gulls from small bays in 1981, but kelp gulls were present in most of these bays eleven years later.

FIRST PREBASIC MOLT IN HERRING, THAYER'S, AND GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULLS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
The Glaucous-winged Gull is a monotypic gull of the North Pacific.
Herring Gulls and Thayer's Gulls were distinguished by a suite of structural and plumage characters (Gosselin and David 1975, Lehman 1980, and Grant 1986).
Unlike Herring Gulls, there was no strong dichotomy in extent of molt in Glaucous-winged Gulls at any one time, perhaps reflecting the latter species' more-or-less continuous breeding distribution from tem- perate to subarctic regions.

The smallest gulls (not discussed here) can be confused with terns at a distance more easily than with large gulls, because of their light, graceful flight and rapid wing beats.
Caution: All of the larger gulls with red bill spots, as their bill changes color with maturity, go through a "ring-billed" stage, when there is a poorly to well-defined dark ring near the tip, and a "California" stage, when the dark color has become restricted to the lower mandible adjacent to the developing red spot.
