This meant nothing to the ballet, but the restoration of port-des-bras that connected it to the first female variation did, as did the missing hip twists usually done by the third ballerina (Anne Derieux) in the coda.
Sad also that PNB did not take this opportunity to restore the earlier cadenza to the Andante, which was significantly enlarged and altered for the State Theater.
Paquita's corps de ballet makes more of an impact; probably because the corps work is both monolithic and grueling (the corps echoes the positions of the soloist and sustains them unsupported.) Balanchine's corps is constantly in motion, so they don't assault your senses in quite the same way.

When Pacific Northwest Ballet’s Tango Tonight program was first brought to my attention last year, my right eye brow immediately went up.
The ballet begins with the men on stage dancing in unison and in various combinations, including some very exciting all-male pas de deux (men practiced the tango with each other in Argentina), in which both men are protagonists, each very much capable of lifting and throwing the other.
The women are introduced one by one throughout the ballet in steamy vignettes that project both their sexuality and their physical tenacity.

PNB made it's Pillow debut on August 16 and we had 6 incredible performances at the Ted Shawn Theater, pictured above.
So many stars of the ballet world have performed on that stage, so it was such a honor to be a part of their 2006 Festival and share the stage with all different companies from around the world that have danced there.

Knowledge of the distinguished ghosts whose slippers you're wearing, of the library-of-dance-styles background of the work, must be a bit daunting to dancers new to the piece and their roles.
Pacific Northwest Ballet's opening-night casts danced almost flawlessly, so maybe I imagined a faint sense of constraint in their movement, like people bearing delicate and irreplaceable crystal objets d'art.
Her recently announced retirement from the company has saddened many, even those who agree that it was time for her to step down from the pedestal from which she's ruled PNB for an astonishing 20 years.

 PNB's decades-old 'Nutcracker' is still fresh and charming
That is a gamble because tens of thousands of adults and children have already seen the ballet, choreographed by Kent Stowell, co-artistic director of PNB, and designed by Maurice Sendak.
When Stowell and Francia Russell, PNB co-artistic director, approached Sendak with their idea of his designing a new "Nutcracker" -- sets and costumes -- there was little guarantee the children's book illustrator and author would be interested.
PNB was virtually unknown at the time, and although Sendak liked working in the theater, he had a preference for more piquant librettos than normally associated with most "Nutcrackers."
